Hi Guys,

Sorry I'm not much of a regular.. I'm not in Canterbury and out of work (still!!!) so travel is limited but I wonder if I could ask for some advice from you guys?

We have a car on our drive. It's hidden from sight of the road (round the back in a residential car park) so not many folks know it is there. It's been vandalised AGAIN and it's not the only car. We've had 4 of them in total be keyed / scratched or have other nasties done to them and its got to the point now where enough is enough. I'm looking at a CCTV option to cover the area either to deter it or catch the culprit(s) and put a stop to it once and for all but I have some problems.

  • Power supply: Although our garden is directly behind our drive and car, between our garden and our house is another property (weird I know) so we can't run a mains cable to the shed for power. There is a shared footpath to the carpark but pulling up concrete slabs and putting a cable under there really isn't a practical option. I do however have a spare 12V car battery - a 065 which I think can deliver a cranking power of 485Ah if I remember correctly. Obviously I need something that will work from 12V and not drain the battery too quickly. Hopefully something that will last a week or two before having to switch the battery for another.
  • Picture quality: needs to be super duper sharp and work at night.
  • Connectivity: Due to the lack of wiring options I need it either to record it on site or remotely. This presents some more problems.. If it records locally it needs to be 12V powered and have plenty of storage but still have a tiny power requirement. I'm also thinking of a wireless outdoor PTZ ip camera but due to the screwy layout of the properties here this could also pose a problem signal wise. I can get over it by putting a machine up in the roof with a wifi card but then that leave me with the issue of wiring as there is no power up there! I suppose if i could get my hands on a wifi bridge that might work.. The only PTZ I found via ebay that I like the look of is £Mega and its 12-14 days away in china..
  • Price (Yes this evil had to be somewhere): Budget is rather limited but I'm after something thats good value and will work well and be resiliant to the elements.
  • Fast delivery: I know its a tall order but whatever I can find that is suitable i then need to find super speedy delivery too! I've looked at all of Maplins stuff and none of it really appealed to me despite there being 3 branches in kent.

All that on a 12V car battery remember.. So.. have any of you guys got any thoughts or suggestions for me?

Just a thought, would the police lend you a camera for this problem?
After all, they would like to see the evidence too

Take care
Sharon.

Even if they don't its worth letting them know and they'll also give you some guidance on the legal side of things too.

Last time I spoke to a plod about this he basically said well.. if you put a camera up and it catches someone in the act who's going to say anything?

I'm between a rock and a hard place at the moment though, PTZ (which will no doubt upset people) or a fixed that spies through a hole in the shed but doesn't allow you to track a guilty person? Reason I'm concerned about that is that if its who I think it is, its happening in the dark and they need to be seen going back to their property to prove its them.

As for the cops... they're not bothered really. Because its happening roughly every 6-8 months their attitude seems to be lump it or sell the car. Yes it has been quite literally said to me that we should consider getting shot of it. I don't think letting people win is a good thing. I'm more than happy to speak to the people doing it and come to a negotiated truce but the car isn't going anywhere. The more damage it takes and the worse looking it gets the securer its future sat there becomes. No-one likes tatty cars laying around but if thats what they want..

Afterthought - you do know that even off-road cars have to be taxed, MOT'd and Insured under new regulations?

No thats not right.

It must be EITHER:
Taxed, insured and MOT'd

OR

SORN'd.

Not both hence it's been declared sorn and will be staying that way for the foreseeable future. See this page:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Motorinsurance/DG_186696

The first exception is a sorn declaration.

No, they just have to be declared.

Ah
Apologies...it seems I was misled by Hampshire Police, when they impounded a vehicle I'd just bought on ebay, and driving back up the M3, as that was what they told me...?
I had to Insure and book for an MOT before I was allowed to remove the car from the pound, after paying the exorbitant release fee, and fine, and given 7 days to produce my MOT/Tax and Driving Licence
Good Luck with your camera project, hope the other info was useful, at least?
