 Dear friends,

Let's find out the truth! Sign the petition for an independent investigation into Bush’s War on Terror.
This week, the US Senate is debating whether to establish an independent inquiry into Bush’s War on Terror. This is a big moment and as expected there are very nervous and powerful interests who want to block it and keep the truth buried.

A full investigation is essential to unravel the extent and detail of eight years of secrecy and cover ups - and to make sure that in future we face the challenge of terrorism with integrity and resolve. Senator Leahy, the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and a handful of Senators are pushing hard for it and argue that the truth about the past is necessary to reestablish US credibility and standing with the rest of the World.

Let's make sure that all the other Senators know that he is right - from Indonesia to Ireland and United Emirates to the United States we overwhelming support a Truth Commission and that those responsible are held to account. We need to send a massive global message of support to beat the powerful force of those who want a cover up. Sign the petition -- which will be delivered to the Senate Judiciary Committee this week:

Evidence abounds of torture, indefinite dentition, abductions, disappearances, citizen wiretapping, and illegal transfers to secret prisons around the world. But the path to truth and justice will be difficult, and the jury is still out about whether the tactics of the War on Terror are truly over. Obama’s Department of Justice argued last week, as they had under Bush, that detainees at the US prison in Bagram, Afghanistan have no legal right to challenge their detention. Conversely, in the same week it was announced that the only remaining ‘enemy combatant’ on US soil is finally to be tried by a US civilian court.

Now is the time to draw a line in the sand. A commission would send a clear message to the rest of the world that the US wants to repair the damage done to human rights by the Bush years that in turn encouraged dozens of other regimes to run roughshod over the rule of law.

As long as the wrongdoing of the Bush years is covered up and unpunished, global divisions will remain. Telling the truth could begin to establish trust where there is suspicion and dialogue where there is violence. Truth and justice in the US could make the world a safer place.

With hope,

Brett, Alice, Pascal, Ricken, Paula, Ben, Graziela, Paul, Luis, Iain, Milena, Veronique - and the entire Avaaz team
