More than a decade ago, Spinnaker Coating tried to play with the big boys and lost. The problem dates way back to 1994 when the label material manufacturer's former owners decided to move from a niche market to supplying large label converting companies.
Fast forward to 2012, and it's a different story for the Troy, Ohio-based company. Current Chairman and CEO Louis Guzzetti led the company through Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring in 2001 and the last recession with steady revenue gains.
His remedy: a renewed focus on customer service and employee satisfaction. Since 2008 the company's revenues have grown to a projected $100 million this year from $73 million. Spinnaker developed capabilities that allowed it to improve its customer service, including the implementation of a sophisticated CRM system that captures detailed customer data. Guzzetti also brought sales representatives back from the field to the office so they would be readily available to more clients.
The process may have seemed counterintuitive, says Guzzetti, but by having sales representatives 100% telephone based, it makes them more available to customer needs. In addition, the company came up with a way to tailor rolls of adhesive paper for smaller-volume items. The firm further improved its service by more closely monitoring customer satisfaction through surveys, Guzzetti says.
Employee engagement is expected to increase as well since Spinnaker moved to an Employee Stock Ownership Program, or ESOP. After a group of investors sold their stake in the company, Guzzetti decided an ESOP would preserve the value created from their investment without bringing in outsiders who weren't familiar with the company's culture.
Former Managing Editor Jon Katz covered leadership and strategy, tackling subjects such as lean manufacturing leadership, strategy development and deployment, corporate culture, corporate social responsibility, and growth strategies. As well, he provided news and analysis of successful companies in the chemical and energy industries, including oil and gas, renewable and alternative.

Burn paddock in late summer early autumn to increase sprouting of cormils and corms. Respraying at lower rates will be necessary for several years to exhaust dormant corms and cormils. Treatment will damage clover.
This treatment is recommended only for early control. More expensive than 2,4-D. Use in non-arable areas only. Useful for areas that become boggy later in winter. Can also be useful in bushland treatments.
Wheat pre-sowing or post-emergence. Barley and oats post-emergence only. Control can be achieved from early emergence to flowering of the cape tulip. Less damage occurs to most non-legume components if applied late post-emergence.

BS5609 is an internationally recognized standard covering the suitability of a particular label for use on containers of chemicals for shipment by sea. BS5609 approval is a requirement for self adhesive labels on drums of chemicals which need International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) certification. The BS5609 standard sets out various durability criteria including adhesive performance, print permanence and abrasion resistance with a minimum standard for labels to be used in marine environments.
Chargebacks are penalties or fees imposed on a vendor when their merchandise is not delivered to a retailer's supply chain according to their terms & conditions. This also includes the performance of the packaging that the merchandise is in - it must meet the demands of the retailer's own supply chain process. The penalties/fees vary per retailer, but the purpose of the chargeback is to recoup additional costs incurred by the retailer for not receiving goods according to the terms & conditions.
Unfortunately, this practice isn't new. Powerful retailers (like Wal-Mart) have had policies in place for years and as the movement takes steam it will most likely be in most industries, large and small, in the near future. Some see it as just another revenue stream for retailers; others see it as a valuable tool to get vendors in compliance. Either way, if you sell your products to one of these retailers you MUST conform to their policies (not an option).
TLW has been working with it's ribbon manufacturers to develop a thermal transfer label and ribbon combination that is both economical and durable enough to put an end to these fees. Call us today to learn more and help put an end to Chargebacks for your organization.
The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive was adopted by the European Union (EU) in 2006 in order to restrict the use of specific substances to very small parts per million concentrations in all electrical and electronic products sold in the EU. These substances include Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6+), Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB), and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether (PBDE). The RoHS Directive is part of a larger overall effort in the EU to reduce the toxicity of the large amounts of e-waste that is produced and or recycled each year.
So what does this have to do with thermal transfer printing in America? If you are exporting products then the RoHS Directive applies to you. Thermal transfer labels, direct thermal labels and thermal transfer ribbons are all either exported directly for use in the EU or they are used in the production & distribution of your products.
Don't worry, we're compliant. TLW's labels and ribbons are free from Lead and the other substances listed above. If you are exporting products and need to provide a written declaration from the manufacturer stating RoHS compliance then please contact us.
