Is there some sort of Save State option or do you have to rely on the default game saves ? I looked around a little bit and couldn't find any mention with the 1.66 release. Thanks!

Yes, CA has a save state option where you can choose when to save state. I just don't remember where it is in the menu tree off the top of my head.
