At first everything seems so clear and obvious: students working in small groups and rotating from one place to another. But how do you decide where those stations in the room should be placed? How many small groups should there be? 8 groups of 4 students? More or less in each group? Who chooses the groups? Is each center the same or does each rotation mean that kids complete a different task? How often do they rotate? Do they need to turn something in at the end of class? Why is this so hard!?
The last center I would encourage you to think about are listening centers where kids can experience musical examples from around the world. There are so many different types of music to include in listening centers but I would encourage you to give students examples of the best and brightest from music history. Include playlists with iconic symphonies (Mozart 40, Beethoven 9), famous jazz musicians (Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker), big band hits, rock and roll favorites, and more.
In addition to studying textbooks and role-playing mock surgeries during lab class, Professor Sanchez discusses real-life scenarios from his job with his students. When possible, he also records surgeries and brings the video coverage back to the classroom to help prepare his students for their clinical rotations.
The study population in this research included 130 operating room nursing students in total. Considering a 95% confidence coefficient and 80% test power, the minimum sample size was 64 individuals (32 in each group). However, as the study required participation for 3 consecutive weeks and the researchers were concerned about the possibility of extensive sample loss, a probable loss of 28% was estimated and 82 students (41 in each group) were recruited.
The improved empathy scores among the participants of this study were not merely the result of theoretical training about empathy or the effects of the role-playing technique by itself. Instead, teaching the concept of empathy to operating room nursing students, who had previously received no education about empathy, requires learning techniques and theoretical issues and then consolidating skills through practice (using the role-playing technique in this study). Therefore, integrating theoretical issues with the role-playing technique could affect empathy scores in participants after the intervention. Since the operating room can be a stressful learning environment for students, the use of engaging training techniques, such as role-playing, can be helpful for students.
In this study, the total mean empathy score among operating room nursing students before the intervention was 107.31 in the experimental group and 105.95 in the control group. Although no comparable study specifically aiming at assessing empathy in operating room nursing students was found, these scores were in agreement with those reported by Williams et al. [2] in a study of undergraduate paramedic students (108.60) using the JSE-HPS, McKenna et al. [18] in a study of nursing students (107.34) with the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy, Health Professional version, and by Hegazi and Wilson [19] in a study of medical students (109.07) using the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy, Student version.
In conclusion, the present study showed that the implementation of a training program using a role-playing technique could be effective for improving empathy scores among operating room nursing students. It is therefore suggested that changes should be made in the curriculum of operating room nursing students in order to familiarize them with the concept of empathy and to encourage them to pay attention to the human dimension of patient care in the operating room. Furthermore, it is proposed that the role-playing technique should be used as a teaching method for training operating room nursing students in clinical skills, since it is thought to be a useful, engaging, and cost-effective technique.
Decisions about mask use in children should be driven by what is in the best interest of the child. Mask use should be flexible, so that children can continue play, education and everyday activities. These activities are an important part of child development and health. No child should be denied access to school or activities because of lack of a mask.
In most circumstances, you should use direct and active supervision. This means an adult should be able to see and hear all preschool children at all times. This includes indoors, outdoors, and nap times. Caregivers and teachers should not be on one level of the building while children are on another floor or in another room. Ratios should remain the same whether inside or outside.
Good classroom design is the first step in effective supervision. You should design your classroom with low shelves, clear traffic patterns, and safe materials. You must also teach children the safety rules for the classroom. Your daily safety inspection should ensure that you have taken all preventive measures to keep children safe.
Preschool children still need supervision during rest time. Usually, preschool-age children rest during a set time of the day (rather than napping on individual schedules like infants and toddlers). During rest time, typical ratios are relaxed. One adult can supervise all children, however, the staff member who leaves the classroom must stay in the facility. Maximum group size must be maintained. Multiple full classes cannot be combined and supervised by a single adult. It is important for at least one adult to stay in the room with children during rest time. This helps monitor and support children who do not sleep, children who wake early, and children who may have sleep problems. Just like on the playground, it is critical that the supervising adult be able to call other adults for help without leaving the room.
Toileting is another time when older preschool children may desire privacy. Your role is to help children use the restroom facilities safely and independently. It is not necessary to see each child as they use the restroom, but you should be able to hear all children. You should also be able to enter the restroom quickly to provide assistance. An adult should be present to supervise hand washing and make sure other sanitation procedures are followed.
Because outdoor play is active, children will usually need more supervision outdoors. Adult-child ratios must be followed at all times. You should also be able to contact another adult for help if needed without leaving the children. A walkie-talkie or approved cell phone (used only in emergencies) is an excellent tool for such a situation.
Playground design is an important part of supervision. The playground equipment should be organized so adults can see all children at all times. There should be no blind spots, such as tunnels around corners, large stones children can hide behind, or enclosed structures.
As teachers, it is our job to make sure the classroom is thoughtfully designed and materials for play are well organized. This type of learning can be supported through learning centers with flexible spaces, open-ended materials, and a daily schedule.
Consider how you might feel if a familiar store has been completely rearranged when you walk in to make a quick purchase? Children can also feel frustrated when they cannot find what they need and when materials for play are unavailable. As a teacher, it is your responsibility to make sure materials are easily accessible and well organized. When organizing your materials, you should think about three goals: independence, easy use, and learning.
The types of storage you choose, including bins, baskets, and containers, can affect how easily children access and put away materials. For example, storing books on a shelving unit that allows children to see the full front covers may spark greater interest in reading and make it easier for children to choose a book they find interesting. Storing simple wooden puzzles on a puzzle rack will also make it easier for children to choose a puzzle and return it to its place when finished playing. Storage bins should be open (without lids) for materials that you want children to access themselves. Bins should also be made of lightweight material (e.g., plastic vs. metal) and not too large or too heavy that children cannot handle them on their own. Clear plastic bins will allow children to easily see the materials that are inside. Bins should also be large enough to accommodate materials without tipping over. Baskets should not be made of materials that could poke or scratch children and should not be used to store materials that can fall out through the holes (e.g., crayons).
Teachers, for example, can use role-playing games in the classroom to help students inhabit different perspectives and understand them as part of larger, holistic systems of thought, explains Matthew Farber, a former teacher and assistant professor at the University of Northern Colorado who studies the intersection of game-based learning and SEL. Though students might not consider themselves adventurers or conservationists when they play the game, the low-risk setting can get them thinking about larger-scale impacts they could have in the real world, adds Farber. As a follow-up activity, students could conduct further research on animals they encountered or even take local nature walks to identify smaller ecosystems of local wildlife.
