The directory isnamed in the "artist - album" format, in our case One Hit Wonder - Let'sTag. The directory contains the tracks in the "track title.mp3"format, which I think is useful because the filenames are short(important when using mobile MP3 players with small displays) and in thecorrect order when sorted alphabetically (important when using hardware MP3players which play the tracks in alphabetical order or in the order inwhich they are burnt on CD and that order is alphabetical when usingmkisofs). Besides this, the artist and album informationis already in the directory name and does not have to be repeated in the filename.But back to our example, the directory listing looks like this:
These files have no tags yet and we want to generate them using Kid3. We useOpen (File menu or toolbar) andselect one of the files in this directory. All files will be displayed in thefile listbox. Lazy as we are, we want to use the information in the directoryand file names to generate tags. Therefore we select all files, then click theTo: Tag 1 button in the Filesection. This will set the title, artist, album and track values in all files.To set the year and genre values of all files, we keep all files selected andtype in "2002" for the Date and select "Pop" from theGenre combobox. To set only these two values, their checkboxesare automatically checked and all other checkboxes are left unchecked. Now we change theselection by only selecting the first file and we see that all tags containthe correct values. The tags of the other files can be verified too byselecting them one by one. The directory list contains the names of the directories in the openeddirectory, as well as the current (.) and the parent(..) directory. It allows one to quickly change the directorywithout using the Open... command or drag and drop.
The Format combo box and line edit contains the formatto be used when the filename is generated from the first or the second tag.The filename can contain arbitrary characters, even a directory part separatedby a slash from the file name, but that directory must already exist for therenaming to succeed. It is possible to prepend and append strings to the replacement for a formatcode by adding them in double quotes inside the curly braces of a formatcode. These strings will only be put into the resulting string if the formatcode yields a nonempty value. For example, if the file name shallboth contain the title and the subtitle, one could use%title [%subtitle] in the format string. But thiswould result in a string ending with [] ifno subtitle frame exists for a file. In order to omit the brackets if nosubtitle is present, %title%" ["subtitle"]" shallbe used instead. This will omit the brackets, the leading space and thesubtitle if not subtitle exists.
Internally, a regular expression is built from the format codes. If advancedregular expressions are required, the format to generate the tags from thefilenames can be given as a complete regular expression with captures whichare preceded by the format codes, e.g. to extract the track numbers withoutremoval of leading zeros, a format like "/%track(\d+) %title(.*)" could beused.
The line edit widgets for Title,Artist,Album, Comment,Date, Track Number andGenre are used to edit the corresponding value in thefirst tag of the selected files. The value will be changed when the fileselection is altered or before operations like Saveand Quit and when the correspondingcheck box at the left of the field name is checked. This is useful tochange only some values and leave the other values unchanged.
If a single file is selected, all check boxes are checked and the line editwidgets contain the values found in the tags of this file. If a tag is notfound in the file, the corresponding empty value is displayed, which is anempty string for the Title, Artist,Album and Comment line edits, 0 for thenumerical Date and Track Number edits andan empty selected value for the Genrecombo box. The values can be changed and if the corresponding check box ischecked, they will be set for the selected file after the selection ischanged. The file is then marked as modified by a disk symbol in the filelistbox but remains unchanged until the Savecommand is used.
If multiple files are selected, only the values which are identical in allselected files are displayed. In all other controls, the empty values asdescribed above are displayed. All check boxes are unchecked to avoidunwanted changes. If a value has to be set for all selected files, it canbe edited and the checkbox has to be set. The values will be set for allselected files when the selection is changed and can be saved using theSave command.
The check boxes also control the operation of most commands affecting thetags, such as copy, paste and transfer between tags 1 and 2. To make iteasier to use with multiple files where all check boxes are unchecked, thesecommands behave in the same way when all check boxes are checked and when allcheck boxes are unchecked.
From Tag 2: The tag 1 fields are set from thecorresponding values in tag 2.If a single file is selected, the GUI controls are filled with the valuesfrom tag 2. If multiple files are selected, the tags of thefiles are directly set.
The tag 2 can not only contain the same valuesas the tag 1, the format is built in a flexible way from several frameswhich are themselves composed of several fields. The tag 2 table showsall the frames which are available in the selected file.
