Gaining some relevant work experience within the field you'd like to work is useful. Some degrees offer a year long work placement either in the UK or abroad, which can help to build professional contacts. If your course doesn't include this there's other fields and practical work you can take advantage of within your degree such as lab work, day trips or residential field courses.

These experiences can often be combined with your current study by working in the evenings, on weekends or by pursuing opportunities during the summer holidays.

Studying zoology provides you with in-depth knowledge in areas such as ethology (the science of animal behaviour), animal biology, physiology, animal evolution and diversity, species conservation and ecology.

It's also possible to do further study in a different area entirely. Many postgraduate courses are open to graduates with a degree in any subject so you can take your career in a different direction if you wish.

The curriculum is designed to provide a basic understanding of zoology through a variety of laboratory experiences in combination with the study of basic theories and defining concepts. The program encourages flexibility, strength, and depth. The course work includes a two-semester introductory biology sequence, one course each in invertebrates and vertebrates, and courses in evolution and ecology. Required courses in the physical sciences include a minimum of one year of introductory chemistry and at least one course in organic chemistry, two courses in physics (all with labs) and one in biochemistry. A course each in calculus and statistics is also required. In addition, students select a minimum of 15 credits of Zoology courses in their chosen areas of concentration.

This major prepares students to work in various areas of zoology, such as research or private industry, or to begin graduate school or professional studies. Career opportunities include medical biotechnology, research technician, protective agencies such as shelters and refuges, trainers and handlers, animal-related business, aquatic/marine biologists, exotic animal specialists, and wildlife conservation. It is an appropriate major for students planning to attend medical or veterinary school. Graduates often pursue advanced degrees to carry out basic research or advance into leadership positions in industry. Participation in internships, laboratory, or research opportunities is highly recommended and encouraged by the department to enhance practical training and development.

Additional careers for Zoology majors include, but are not limited to: aquarium and museum curator/director; zoo keeper, animal trainer and instructor, science librarian, environmental technician, fish and wildlife technician, veterinary technician/assistant, marine bacteriologist or biologist or ecologist, humane society positions, cytotechnologist, ecologist, fisheries biologist or conservationist, laboratory technician, marketing researcher, medical technologist, park ranger, pharmaceutical sales representative, production supervisor, quality analysis technician in food or pharmaceutical industry, radiation protection technician, research technician, industrial hygienist, wildlife photographer.

To be qualified for graduation, students in the Zoology major must have a minimum grade of C- in each of their biological, physical science, and mathematical courses used to meet requirements for the major. This applies to courses taken as substitutions for meeting these requirements. The minimum scholastic average acceptable for graduation is 2.000 computed only for courses attempted at CSU.

In 1991 we started off tutoring practicals for Zoology (Honours) at the B.Sc level, we have now diversified to assist students persuing zoology in Bacholors degree both Honours & General, practical for botany Honours and General, as well as those in Zoology M.Sc.

This course emphasises how evolution has shaped the spatial and temporal patterns of animal biodiversity, and how we can use molecular genetic tools to gain a better understanding of what biodiversity means and how we can measure it.

Through written assignments you will consider how evolutionary processes shape biodiversity in Scotland and how we can maintain this biodiversity through effective stewardship, conservation and management.

You will apply your knowledge of biology and zoology to the improvement of management practices and to the enhancement of animal welfare. Field trips to local farms and a wildlife park will allow you to observe industry standards for captive animal welfare.

By researching and presenting a seminar on ethical issues related to animals in captivity, you will develop critical thinking skills and build experience in constructing and evidencing an argument, and also gain skills in group working and oral communication.

Weekly practical activities will provide opportunities to observe animals, develop an understanding of the adaptive value of animal behaviour, and the practical methods we use to study it. Each will be preceded by a lecture covering the subject area and the expectations for the practical that week.

Students will apply their knowledge by conducting their own research project, setting their question and choosing a study system, collecting, visualising, and analysing data, and writing up the report

Residential field course based on Ngala Training Camp, Balule Game Reserve, and the Greater Kruger Ecosystem in South Africa, structured to provide you with training in animal tracking and the interpretation of ecological data in the field.

This course will give you the opportunity to learn about contemporary topics in fundamental behavioural ecology and how this knowledge can be applied to improve the conservation and management of animals.

Academics working at the cutting edge of behavioural research will report on the state-of-art in their field., while you will gain direct experience of in silico approaches regularly used by researchers. Directed learning activities will encourage further exploration of the latest advances in the field through recorded lectures and conference presentations and the critical examination of journal articles and pre-prints.

Lectures by research staff working in aquaculture provide you with specialised knowledge in a range of current issues, including growth, nutrition, health and disease resistance, genetics and environmental interactions.

This course covers human, livestock and wildlife parasitisms. The topics of host-parasite interactions, control of disease in humans and livestock, and impacts in wildlife are approached at the level of cell biology, immunology, epidemiology and health (veterinary and public).

Teaching combines lectures, research seminar style sessions, and student/group led exercises. A critical review essay provides an opportunity for independent study. Coursework is supported by individual and group tutorials.

The mixture of a theoretical background, group discussion and examination of modern issues gives you a good grounding in vector-borne disease for future careers in this area while also developing your critical analysis and communication skills.

Archaeo-zoological and palaeo-zoological research requires knowledge of wide-ranging techniques and research methods, their application possibilities and their appropriate analysis and presentation of data. To do so, seminar-lab sessions will introduce sampling and cataloguing practices, faunal evolutionary trends and identification of Holocene and Pleistocene faunal remains - among other methodologies.

Hands-on work will help to develop research and technical skills used in the discipline that can actually broaden to a more general archaeological scope.
