Happy Friday Colleagues,
I wanted to share a recent society news post, which explores an ambitious national effort: the American Center for Cures (ACC) [LINK]
As highlighted in the latest piece from The Cancer Letter, ACC proposes a bold approach to reshaping biomedical research through a $750B bond-financed model aimed at accelerating cures—distinct from NIH’s traditional structures. As the current White House Administration is “decimating” NIH Funding, I believe this effort could indeed represent a unique moment to shift from incremental funding cycles to a more results-driven, corporate model grounded in urgency, collaboration, and innovation.
As many of you already know, I have formally endorsed this initiative because I view it as more than just a funding mechanism—it’s a catalyst for transformation. As I shared in the article:
“These are the kinds of bold experiments we must try. Putting politics aside, we need new pathways to help cancer researchers, and the broader biomedical community thrive in a system that’s currently stretched too thin.”
If you are interested in learning more or potentially getting involved, I’d be glad to connect. I’m currently helping coordinate one of the key verticals focused on AI, Data Science, and Informatics. As the initiative continues to gain momentum, we’ve launched an exploratory effort, and I anticipate reaching out to many of you to serve on a leadership committee as plans evolve.
For now, you can sign up to stay informed and get updates here: https://www.ci4cc.org/american-center-for-cures
Best,
Sorena
