Have a question on ${subject}

Here https://github.com/CanCanCommunity/cancancan/wiki/Fetching-Records there is a note that says

> Note: As of 1.4 this is done automatically by load_resource for the index action, so it rarely needs to be done manually.

Can anybody explain me a bit more what it means. Adding an example is also appreciated
