As some people here will know, I have taken up art in my old age, and
apart from spending a small fortune on tubes of paint and watercolour
paper and easels and an amazing amount of associated paraphenalia, it is
a great joy to me. Then there are my life drawing sessions, where an
array of young ladies remove their clothes for me and I get to draw them
with trembling hands.

I ran into a mate of mine at an exhibition in Bungendore on the weekend,
and the conversation turned to current politics, as it so often does
since the events of the last month. We went around the corner for
coffee, very pleasant in the afternoon sun and he told me a political
story.

He's been working on a landscape, quite a big painting, of balloons
floating over Canberra in the early morning. Floriade is on and there
are a few more than usual. There are only two places in Canberra where
you can actually look down on the balloons so as to get a reasonable
amount of the scenery in as a background, and as the view from Black
Mountain is restricted and is straight into the morning sun, he went to
Mount Ainslie - the view is perfect with Anzac Parade running straight
down to the lake and the land axis continuing up past Old Parliament
House to the new one beyond with flag flying bravely from the
distinctive mast and a balloon or two floating gently past.

Last week he was up there, just blocking in the view, holding up his
brush as painters do to check on angles and sizes and positions and
sketching them in - standing back now and then to check that he was
accurate.

He heard a puffing noise in the bush in front of the lookout, and was
surprised to see Kim Beazley, the Opposition Leader, emerge with a
couple of fit young men, his police minders, and a skinny bloke who
wasn't quite as fit, a journalist maybe or a political staffer. He was
doing all the gasping and panting while everyone else was just breathing
heavy.

One of cops came straight over to my friend while Beazley did some
stretching exercises. He said it was funny the way he looked through his
bag of paints and stuff while showing that he didn't know anything about
painting. Just checking for weapons, I suppose - security has gone up a
lot since the World Trade Centre disaster.

Anyway, Kim Beazley came over a couple of minutes later and watched and
chatted for a few minutes, while the skinny bloke returned to normal.
He's lost quite a bit of weight apparently, and runs up Mount Ainslie
every morning while Parliament is sitting. Says it nearly killed him the
first few times, but it's worth it.

After a bit they moved off and got into one of those white Commonwealth
cars which had pulled up in the meantime.

Same thing, exactly the same thing happened the next morning. The
painting was a bit more developed, with the hot air balloons (how
appropriate) floating over Parliament House and the rising sun making
them into sort of half-moon shapes against the deep green and gold of
the Brindabellas in the far distance. I'm hoping to see the finished
product.

The next day he was pretty well finished, and he was looking forward to
showing Kim Beazley the way the shadows stretched out, ending in upside
down teardrops on the side of Black Mountain. If there's one thing we
painters crave it's someone telling us how clever and artistic we are.
And maybe buying a painting for a couple of hundred bucks.

Especially when it's someone important, who could become the next Prime
Minister.

But this time there were shouts and laughter in the nearby bush, and
soon you could hear Kim Beazley chanting, "Pull... pull... pull!" in a
rhythmic way. Suddenly there was a great cheer, sounds of people falling
down and then silence.

A couple of minutes passed and nothing happened. Then Kim, the skinny
bloke all red in the face, and the two minders came up the steps, walked
straight past and got into the big white car. And drove off.

My friend was puzzled and went over to the railing and looked over. He
almost fell over in shock. There, twenty metres down the slope was a
huge carpet snake, still wriggling and thrashing even though its head
had been pulled right off.

About a quarter of an hour later another car drove up fast and two men
got out with shovels and went down into the bush. My friend looked again
before he left and the snake was gone.

This morning I went up to Mount Ainslie myself and had a look around. No
Kim Beazley, no snake, not even a pool of dried blood. Just a couple of
hot air balloons floating over the lake. I stayed there about half an
hour, it was so pleasant.

But as I went back to my car, I found another one pulled up behind it. A
white Falcon, model before mine. Couple of men in it, looking at me.
They didn't get out or anything, didn't say anything. But they didn't
look very friendly. I remember their car rego, because it was a bit of
an odd one, one that wouldn't mean anything except to a Canberran.

YZZ-998. The second last number in the old numbering system. Anybody
know this car?

Amazing, isn't it? I'd be interested in seeing any evidence to the
contrary, actually. Does Kim Beazley run up Mount Ainslie every morning

Anybody?

all i see is that you went up and saw a car. men looking at you. they could
have been admiring the view.

You are an utter twat. there is plenty of evidence to prove that here on the

Table and bucket for one!

Actually, Kimbo's looking quite slender nowadays. It used to be when
Laurie Oakes interviewed him that it was a real battle of the giants.

Laurie hasn't gotten any thinner - quite the reverse if you see him
doing the interviews in profile on the Sunday show.
