Jumping in late here (plethora of work + conference)… Knowing you, Joan, and having visited your church a couple of times, it must be a great relief to know that you will have a rector in September after such a long time without one. I add my prayers that Ms Bretlaff will be a strong spiritual leader and unifier of your diverse congregation. That the selection committee was so impressed bodes well!

Hi Shirley,

That’s good to know. The selection committee pretty impressed.

Its Beth Bretlaff. Apparently her last posting was as chaplain at Ashcroft school here. I don’t think many of us are familiar with her.

I’ve just been at St. John’s for about 10 years.

Who is the new rector to be?   I used to work at St. John the Evangelist, long ago.

Mary.

Greetings all,

I haven’t written in a few years, but always enjoy your posts. My computer recently died and I’ve needed to recapture all my addresses, etc., so this seemed like a good time to reconnect. A busy time too as I’ve just bought a condo in Ottawa and am selling my town house—rather stressful, but I’m hoping all will go well—and quickly!

But one resolution of more interest to CanAng is that St. John the Evangelist in Ottawa has finally, after

nearly 2 1/2 years, has a new incumbent who will start in Sept. We’ve had a wonderful interim, but especially in the last months we’ve felt rather in limbo, wondering if we’d ever find someone. It’s a good feeling to have that settled as St. John’s is a big downtown church with a very diverse congregation. Please keep us in your prayers.

Cheers,

Joan Dolphin

I eyes go on recovering, Ted. Eyesight problems are a blasted nuisance!

Your 1963 was indeed memorable! Much less memorable was mine, although it marked the final year of my B.A. and when I really enjoyed my studies because I was working only part-time that year: all the rest had been done while working full-time, so for the first time I could really engage with what I was learning instead of just concentrating on what was needed to pass the final exam.

Thank you for telling us about the services at your church – although you say that your church is “slowly and carefully moving into the 21st century,” they look very modern to a New Brunswick Anglican!

CANANGLERS ALL,

AFTER ALMOST 5 MONTHS, AN EYE  OPERATION, TWO INTRAOCULAR INJECTIONS AND SEVERAL EYE DROPS, I’VE REACHED THE POINT WHERE A 30 POINT FONT MAKES SOME READING  AND WRITING POSSIBLE, THIS AND THE RENEWAL OF EMAILS FROM CANANGLERS LIFTS THE SPIRIT. PLEASE PARDON SPELLING MISSTAKS!

1963 WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR IN THAT MY BELOVED FINALLY ALLOWED ME TO MARRY HER.

THE PRAISH WHERE I AM AN HONOURARY ASSISSTANT IS SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY MOVING INYO THE 21ST CENTURY.  THE BAS WAS INTRODUCED ABOUT 12 YEARS AGO WITH STUDY AND TEACHING. SINCE THAT TIME, WE OCCASIONALLY USE OTHER VARIATIONS, SUCH AS A NEW ZEALAND EUCHARISTIC PRAYER AND U.K. CREED.

AFTER TEACHING AND EXPERAMENT THE EARLY SERVICE IS IN THE CHURCH AND A SIMPLE BAS, PAGE 185.  THE MIDDLE SERVICE TAKES PLACE IN THE PARISH HALL, WITH CHAIRS “IN THE ROUND”, MODERN MUSIC  LEAD BY KEYBOARD, GUITER AND AFRICAN STYLE DRUM.  THE SERVICE IS THE MOST MODERN AND THE PRAYER AND SONGS PROJECTED ON A ASCREEN. DURING THE PEACE EVERYONE EXCHANGES THE PEACE WITH EVERYPNE ELSE.  AFTER THE PEACE, PEOPLE TEND TO HEAD TO THE NEAREST CHAIR – RARELY THE THET STARTED IN.

THE LAST SERVICE IS IN THE CHURCH.  THE SERVICE IS MODIFIED BAS PAGE 185, WITH ANCIENT AND MODERN HYMNS ALL PROJECTED IN A SCREEN.  BECAUSE OF NUMBERS, THE PEACE IS ALMOST “NORMAL” AND MOST THINGS ARE DONE IN “DECENCY AND ORDER” – LITTLE NEED FOR THE WARDENS STAVES  <G>,

ALTHOUGH I AM PREPARED TO ADMIT THAT SOME MODERN CHURCH IS RATHER UGLY, A GOOD PORTION IS MORE SINGABLE THAN ANGLICAM MUSIC – ESPECIALLY FOR THE UNTRAINED IN THE PEW AND FOR YOUNGER PEOPLE.  ALTHOUGH I’M IN MY 8TH DECADE, I’ll MORE READILY SING A 2000’S SONG THAN A TALLIS CANON OR OLD 100TH.  BECAUSE I’M AN EASTER CHILD I STAND BEFORE GOD’S THRONE FOR PRAYER.

THROUGH EYE STRAIN, I’VE GONE ON FAR TOO LOBG.

BLESSINGS,

TED BRIFFETT

I am glad to hear that both the selection committee and Shirley think Beth will be good for St. John’s.
A new adventure for you and the congregation.  Have there been tensions recently?  I don’t remember any problems with the diversity when I was there.
Mary.

My apologies, Mary for taking so very long to reply to your email. The summer has been spent getting my house ready for sale and then getting it sold. I get possession of my condo next week, but won’t move in till the 21st. which will give me time to do some bathroom renovations and painting. But it’s been a busy summer.
On 2 separate Monday mornings when I was working in the office Beth was in and I was able to speak to her briefly. I was impressed. She’s full of energy and good ideas—both of which she’ll need in spades at St. J’s.
After 2+ years with an interim the tensions have gradually faded, but when the previous rector had her melt down on Vestry Sunday the congregation was pretty well split in half—not an easy time to say the least. But the interim was good in that respect, but we all began to feel it was time we had an incumbent, especially after 2 attempts to hire someone went awry!
No, the diversity is good and not divisive, but the tensions were there earlier in spades.
I’ll keep you posted after she starts in Sept.
Cheers,\
Joan
