STORY: THE SACRIFICE OF THE GREAT SAGE DADHIICI
As the story goes, the elderly Mahars’i Dadhiici was a great rishi who
stood for the cause of universal welfare. And ultimately he sacrificed his
life for the human society.
In this mythological tale, it is told that when the devatas (pious people)
and da’navas (demons) were fighting against one another, then in order to
achieve permanent victory over the da’navas, the devatas went to Mahars’i
Dadhiici for his blessing– and to get a boon from him.
Up until that point in the battle, the da’navas (wicked people) were
winning the war. So the devatas (moralists) knew that something special
needed to be done, otherwise they were sure to lose the war. And they also
knew that Mahars’i Dadhiici had performed great penance in his life.
So the devatas approached Mahars’i Dadhiici knowing that if he gives one of
the bones from his holy body then the vajra (mighty weapon like a
lightening bolt) made from that bone will be enough to permanently
annihilate the demonic forces. Because it would take the bone of one great
ascetic with lots of spiritual power in order to win the war. So only if
Mahars’i Dadhiici sacrificed his life by giving one of his bones could the
devatas be saved– otherwise not. With this in mind the devatas approached
Mahars’i Dadhiici.
When they arrived at the doorstep of his ashram, the Mahars’i was deeply
absorbed in sadhana. But knowing that they had come calling especially for
him he broke his meditation. And then after listening to the request of
those devatas, Mahars’i Dadhiici agreed with their demand– he gave his
approval for the plan.
Then the great Mahars’i Dadhiici permanently withdrew all the vital energy
from his body through the practice of pranayama. And by this way the
devatas (righteous forces) could make a weapon from the bones of his body
and win the war. Thus Mahars’i Dadhiici gave up his existence for the great
cause of universal welfare.
DADHIICI IS NOT THE SAME AS SHAHIID OR MARTYR
Since then the term ‘Dadahiici’ was born. It means sacrificing one’s life
for the great cause– Bhagavata Dharma. Hence, according to Baba the term
‘Dadhiici’ is distinctly different from those other terms which denote one
who has given their life for their narrow and dogmatic religion.
Baba says:
“When Christians die for Christendom, they are called martyrs;
When Muslims die for Islam they are called shahiids;
When My children sacrifice their live for the ideals of Bha’gavat Dharma,
I call them Dadhiicis.” – Shrii Shrii Anandamurti, 5 March, 1967
Therefore it is every year on this day of 5 March that we remember all
those great souls who have given their life for the establishment of AM
ideology.
Rishis and sadhus perform tapas for the benefit of mankind and all
creation. They tolerate hardships and insults without any thought of
personal gain. One such rishi was Dadhichi. He willingly offered his body
to save the devas.
Once a Brahmin named Vrutra became the head of the demons. He gave up his
dharma – duty – of doing good to others. Instead he turned to violence and
began to battle with the devas. Hence, he became known as Vrutrasur. ‘Asur’
means demon. He began to win. The devas became frightened against his evil
might. Along with Indra, they approached Shri Vishnu for help. He told them
that he could not be destroyed with ordinary weapons.
“Only a weapon made from the bones of a saintly rishi will kill Vrutrasur,”
revealed Vishnu.
“But nobody will give up his beloved body. Who would die to provide a
weapon?” inquired the devas.
The devas went off in search of Dadhichi rishi. When they reached his
ashram, they felt anxious.
“What can I do for you?” asked Dadhichi rishi.
“Vrutrasur, the leader of the demons, is destroying us. We are losing
against his evil might. So we asked Shri Vishnu for help. He advised us to
make a weapon from the bones of a great rishi. Please help us and deliver us
from this evil,” pleaded the devas humbly.
The supreme donor is one who gives happily what is asked.
“O devas!” said Dadhichi. “It is better that my bones help you attain
victory, rather than rot in the ground. The message of Sanatana Dharma is to
remain happy in the happiness of others. Here, I give you my body.”
So saying, he sat in meditation and meditated upon Paramatma. With his
yogic power he then left his body.
Indra made the vajra weapon from the bones. With this the devas battled with Vrutrasur.
It is said that the battle lasted for 360 days. In the end the devas won.
On this day margis fast during the daytime, then at until sunset, conduct dharmacakra,
followed by a collective meal in memory of those 5 acaryas who were slaughtered
on this day at Anandanagar in 1967 by local villagers who were incited by CBI agents.
The agents had left slaughtered cow parts around on the ground and told the villagers
that this act was done by the margis and acaryas.
We can also remember Baba who left His physical body well before seeing His mission
fulfilled of creating Sadvipra Samaj and establishing Mahavishva here on earth.
