The deal ensures the federal government will cut some of the red tape
and speed up the immigration process, Alberta Employment Minister Iris
Evans said.
She said the province's goal is to see at least 10 per cent of new
immigrants to Canada settle in Alberta.
Under the deal:
* Alberta will be able to nominate more immigrants with needed
labour skills for quicker processing by the federal government.
* A new pilot project will expedite the entry of some foreign
health-care professionals who have applied to work in Alberta.
* Canada and Alberta will co-operate in overseas immigration
marketing initiatives.
* Ottawa promises to make it easier and quicker for Alberta to get
needed foreign workers.
Evans said the new procedures will ensure potential immigrants aren't
disappointed when they arrive here.
"An important element of this program is looking at the market people
are coming from, letting them know what is required, giving that
information before they come so we don't have people here with fallen
dreams and expectations."
The agreement was signed Friday by Evans, federal Immigration Minister
Diane Finley and Premier Ed Stelmach.
Stelmach promised during his run to be leader of the Conservative
party that he would negotiate a deal on immigration with Ottawa.
