It continues to be difficult for companies to find highly skilled
candidates for executive positions, according to George Madden at
executive recruiting firm Pinton, Forrest & Madden in Vancouver,
Canada. He forecasts that 40 percent of public and private high-level
managers will retire in the next four years or fiver years.

Hiring talented executives involves more than just providing high
salaries--it is standard to offer recruiting firms roughly 20 percent
to 30 percent of the base salary of the position plus bonuses, to be
paid over a two-month period. If the hired executive leaves within 12
months, the recruiting firm typically looks for a new candidate at no
charge.

Madden notes that today's candidates no longer emphasize income but
rather inquire about job responsibilities and challenges.
Montreal-based Pfizer encourages recruitment by offering bonuses for
referrals, promoting its brand through advertising, and offering
substantial relocation packages.

The latter includes paying for a trip to visit the workplace, nearby
communities, and schools for the potential new hire and his or her
family. Steven Pezim at Toronto-based recruiting firm Bedford Group
says relocation packages might also include paying for moving costs,
realtor commissions, and temporary accommodations until the new hire
finds a home.
