FRENCH REPORT LOOKS AT CETA’S EFFECT ON AGRICULTURE: A detailed report destined for French President Emmanuel Macron on the impact of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement has landed, and it has some key details for the French agriculture sector. Here’s a few highlights:

The agreement will lead to “a limited increase” of pork and beef imports into the EU.

The dairy sector will benefit from the recognition of numerous geographical indications.

The breeding conditions in Canada and the EU differ massively due to rules concerning the use of hormones and animal welfare. “The risk is that CETA will not provide the favorable conditions necessary for transitioning toward ecological agriculture,’ the report said.

There is a risk that new plant breeding techniques which would be considered genetic modification in Europe could enter the EU marketplace.
