For the last two Convocations Memorial University of
Newfoundland and Labrador (MUN) has followed its
past practice of having the Ode to Newfoundland sung,
saying that it omits reference to Labrador, is too
Christian God-centred, and refers to fathers but not
mothers.

So I guess MUN finds the Ode to be Ode-ious :-)
even though the university was founded in memory
of Newfoundland soldiers who held the Ode in
high esteem

Quite a few years ago I wrote a letter to
The Telegram saying that in the Ode that
"fathers" could be replaced by "forebears".

Also, "God guard thee Newfoundland" could
be replaced by "We love thee Newfoundland",
and perhaps one repetition of it replaced by
"We love thee Labrador".

"This could be the final breath; This is life and death;
This is hard rock and water; Out here between wind and flame;
Between tears and elation; Lies a secret nation" (Ron Hynes)

Ha, I should proofread more, especially when I am
half awake. 1988 was when I got my M.Sc. from UBC,
and I got a B.Sc.(Hon.) from MUN in 1985 and a
Ph.D. from MUN in 2018.

I have send my post, with corrections, to
let...@thetelgram.com as well.
