Recommended reading: The Serial Communications Developers Guide by Mark
Nelson. He covers C and C++ programming, with an emphasis on theory.

Other resources would most likely be found in the LINUX groups.

Look for the HOWTO papers. There are 2 major ones you'll be interested in.
One is about the code to make it work, the other is how to set up your hardware
lines. Go to http://www.linuxdoc.org/ and search for "serial" and "rs-232".
You'll get lots :-)

Patience, persistence, truth,
Dr. mike

I've done a lot of asynchronous serial/socket I/O programming
on Linux and other Unices. My MC68HC11 debugger/loader "DB11"
contains a simple API in C++ for abstracting these things. Get
the source from <http://www.osa.com.au/~cjh/electronics/db11.html>
and look at multiplex.[ch]xx and serial.[ch]xx

I'd suggest looking at some source for a program using
serial port to access a device. Look on Freshmeat, etc.

Also, there is a serial programming HOW-TO.

I made use of some software designed to access Dallas
Semiconductor digital thermometers, though I found a
bug and made other changes for generality.

Good Luck.
