RELIGIOUS FAUX PAS?

PM ate the wafer, aide says
PM receives communion wafer

Jul 08, 2009 11:23 AM

Richard J. Brennan
OTTAWA BUREAU

OTTAWA — A spokesperson for Prime Minister Stephen Harper is denying
reports he received a sacramental communion wafer recently at Roméo
LeBlanc's Roman Catholic funeral mass and pocketed it instead of
consuming it.

The religious faux pas was caught on video during the former governor
general's funeral in New Brunswick, where Harper received the wafer
representing the body of Christ but instead of eating it appears to
put in his program or pocket.

Dimitri Soudas, a spokesman for the prime minister, said that Harper
"was offered communion, and accepted."

Soudas said he consumed the consecrated host immediately afterwards,
within seconds of taking it from the priest, contrary to suggestions a
video shows he did not.

"Unfortunately CBC cameras don't stay on the prime minister long
enough sometimes," Soudas told reporters in L'Aquila, Italy, where
Harper is attending a G8 summit.

"The priest offered communion to the prime minister. He accepted it,
and he consumed it."

Soudas explained that while Harper is a Protestant, "who is the prime
minister to question a priest offering him communion."

Meanwhile, a senior New Brunswick Roman Catholic priest has called on
the Prime Minister's Office to explain what happened to the
sacramental communion wafer.

"If I were the prime minister, I would at least offer an explanation
to say no offence was meant and then (clarifying) what happened to the
consecrated host," Monsignor Brian Henneberry, vicar general and
chancellor of the Diocese of Saint John, told the Saint John Telegraph
Journal.

The incident was ratcheted up when the video clip made it to YouTube.

It shows Harper accepting the wafer from a priest but not consuming it
while clearly showing New Brunswick Lieutenant-Governor Herménégilde
Chiasson, the next person to receive the host, raise it to his mouth.

Neil MacCarthy, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Toronto,
explained that Harper should not have accepted the communion given
that he isn't Roman Catholic.

"In the Roman Catholic faith we say that Roman Catholics are the only
ones who should present themselves for communion because we believe
that are actually consuming the body and blood of Jesus Christ," he
told the Toronto Star.

MacCarthy said he is sure Harper meant no disrespect but should have
politely declined by crossing his arms over his chest. "We encourage
those who are non-Catholic ... to present themselves for a blessing
(instead)," he said.

1) Stephen Harper - like Stockwell Day - is really from Ontario -
Toronto to be specific.

2) Did Stephen Haper accept a bribe in the form of a communion wafer
from the Catholics?? Do you think Mr. Harper will convert to get
votes?

3) How does that compare to the Liberals misdirecting millions of tax
dollars to their cronies through the sponsor ship program?

4) if any political leader attended an islamic event would they be
expected to pray on a matt facing Mecca? What happened to freedom of
religion in Canada?

Harper needs brighter advisors. The proper way to refuse communion is to
cross your arms over your chest and bow your head. That signals the priest
you want a blessing and not communion.

In any case, what a disgusting cannibalistic ritual in the first place.

Mr. Harper needs to be replaced by a real leader, one willing to deal
with issues and tell the truth to taxpayers.
Sadly there is no one in the C.P.C., Liberals, or N.D.P. that is
willing to do that.

So they replaced animal sacrifice with symbolic ritual cannibalism... now
that's progress!

Anyone who would believe that crock of shit is sadly lacking a viable

Harper should demand better advisors for what Ottawa advisors cost.
Harpo/Flahtery have the money, they just blow it on liberal-debt-economists.

Trouble is they listen to the pied piper liberal spend crazy debtors.

I think a billion or so Catholics actually do believe that. No Catholic has
ever been able to explain the mystery of how transubstantiation works, but
if you "believe in magic" then anything is possible. Catholics are tought
to believe the bread and wine becomes Christ's flesh, so it's cannibalism at
the very least in concept. Of course, that can be all explained away to
curious critics by saying it's okay to eat divinities.

"Junior! I've told you once and I've told you twice, don't put that dirty
Jesus in your mouth, it'll make you sick."

At one time while I was still a young man, a young priest encouraged
me to become a Roman Catholic but fortunately I escaped.
