Skippy Poilievre was ready to roll, with a number of party backroom heavies
in his campaign, and at the very last minute he suddenly remembered that he
had a family. Not to many people could tell him to bow out, maybe only
Harper.
Meanwhile, Andrew Scheer is now being babysat by Ian Brodie, Harper's
ex-chief of staff, to make sure that he follows his lines properly in the
upcoming show.
Harper stepped down from the money control even before Charest was running,
so that wasn't the real reason. And Jean Charest probably saw what was
moving in the dark waters. He could make a good fight against Peter MacKay,
but knew that in a rigged Conservative convention (is there any other kind?)
he couldn't beat Harper.
Peter MacKay is a Progressive Conservative (I have opinions about that but
nevermind) and the thought of a PC taking over after Harper did all he could
to strangle them would be more that Harper could stand. The rest of the
field is, what, Erin O'Toole and some far-right goofs (one whom just shot
himself in the dick). None of them could beat MacKay. Harper would rather
shut out a Progressive and probably lose a very dirty election than see the
PCs come back. Doing an improbable "Joe Clark" to Justin Trudeau would just
be icing on the cake.
Stephen Harper, he's not coming back for you.
