Isn't that what Mr. Dithers has done with his hand gun ban? It is already
illegal to own an unregistered hand gun (and has been for about 70 years)
and now Martin has banned them.

Is he now going to confiscate the legally registered hand guns owned by
collectors and target shooters? How will that prevent gun crimes?

How will the ban stop the use of imported illegal hand guns to shoot people
at the Jane and Finch hotspot in the Centre of the Known Universe? Will
people already committing crimes be deterred by his ban?

What is Mr. Dithers smoking?

So many questions. So few answers

The answer is that his proposed ban on hand guns APPEARS to the general
populace to be a 'getting tough on gun crime' policy. Much of the
genpop don't think things through, even the ones with graduate degrees.
I know an MSW who says that if there weren't any guns out there there
wouldn't be gun crime; meaning that no one should own guns.(except for
the hallowed police and other uniforms) What he fails to do though is
to understand that crims will get guns. This idioto even worked in
jails before, so you'd think crim naievity wouldn't affect him.

Gun control isn't about crime. It's not even about guns.

It's about control.

The sad thing is that those supposedly-sophisticated well educated
people from such places as the Centre of the Universe are the ones
being politically placated by the existence of the gun registry, and
they are the ones who will have to deal with the fact that the gun
registry will do nothing to protect them from illegal handguns. They
will be the brunt of the failure. Their children and neighbors will be
the ones getting shot with illegal guns.

The solution that *they* wanted in place will do nothing to safeguard
*them*. And these people actually consider themselves better and
smarter than the rest of the country.

All it does is impose draconian regulations on the peaceable gun owners
in places other than the Centre of the Universe. And cost us all $2
billions for absolutely no added security. Even the RCMP can't use the
registry for anything useful, because they know that the guns that are
registered aren't the problem. It is the guns that are not, and will
never be registered, that are the problem. By its very deisgn and
concept, the gun registry will never tell the anyone anything useful
that will help anyone's security in any situation.

And why do you say that? It sounds like more self righteous NRA clap trap.
The same morons who keep calling a 1 year anomaly in Canadian violent crime
statistics "a trend" for the sake of their pro-gun agenda.

No. "No Gun Crime" means crime without guns. Lower violence amplitude,
more time for sane intervention. Take away the guns and people still
beat the shit outta each other with knifes, baseball bats, crowbars, whatever.

But usually, patching them up afterwards is much cheaper than with guns.

Tools whose primary use is weaponry should not be concealed in a civil
society. The political purposes for the guarantees of the right to
possess arms in the US are not served by concealed weapons for sneaking
up and robbing/stealing/murdering your neighbor.

A loony French Muslim murders 14 women in Montreal and it costs all Canadians
two billion bux and diminishes their right to own their own property.

Fifty black kids in Toronto shoot each other and all Canadians have their
registered hand guns confiscated and millions spent for extra policing all over
the country.

Not that I think what he is doing is right but I sure as hell wish Martin had
come to the conclusion to ban all hand guns before he wasted the two billion.

Get a Hearing Aid. They are banning weapons that have mostly already been
banned in Canada in the first place and this isn't that far from what some parts
of the USA have already done as well. Why not get your facts from better
sources than your fellow partisans on Usenet?

And turn up the Hearing Aid, the sounds you're hearing are muffled.

Firstly, the two do not necessarily correlate. People weren't carrying handguns
in the UK anyway.
You're just sopping up the usual NRA propaganda, even the 40% (not even proven)
number is bogus because there was a redefinition of how crime statistics were
measured which attributed to the total number. Find a reputable link which
validates the 40% increase first, then cut it down by 20% to attribute for the
change in measuring such events which made it appear as if there was a drastic
increase, which there wasn't.

Don't trust the NRA for 'gun facts', unless you're just into spreading
misinformation and lies.

Criminals will not turn in their guns and will always have a source of
guns.

Remember that the largest mass murder in Canada was an arson.

The handgun ban will only save us from the law-abiding criminals. How
can it possibly work anywhere near 100%? 50%? 25%? 5%?

Someone who driver's licence was suspended, and who had no car
insurance, still got behind the wheel of a car even though he was so
drunk he could bare stand. He proceeded to cause an accident that
nearly killed my sister. Nobody ever tried killing anyone in my family
with a gun.

No problem can, or will, be cured my throwing more laws at it. Anyone
who says it will should go to work as a stand-up comedian.

Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper said gun crime has spun out of control
because the Liberals failed to do anything. He pledged to crack down on illegal
gun use, stop guns from crossing the border, and bring in mandatory prison
sentences.

"We need to rid our country of illegal guns, that's why I support tough gun
control," he said in a statement. "The Conservative Party will do everything
necessary to make sure guns stay out of the hands of criminals."

I wish one of them would advocate search and seizure provisions that would
enable law enforcement to move freely against known offenders and their
associates.

Canada's murder rate is about a third of that in the United States, but there is
rising fear about gun crime in Toronto, traditionally a stronghold for the

The country's homicide rate jumped by 12 percent last year from 2003, according
to official statistics. Handguns accounted for two-thirds of all firearms
murders.

The big danger is that Canadians will acceopt the idiotic ideology prevalent in

law enforcement sources)are stolen from collections during break-ins, or are
you just playing dense?

Most of these handguns in collections serve no other purpose but to be stolen
or to support the macho insecurities of the owners. The law provides for
them to be disabled to be kept.

How will a ban stop people from stealing handguns? If someone has a
handgun anyway, someone else can still steal it. Nothing will work 100%
if not all 100% of the people obey the law. I don't think you'll see
that happen anytime soon.

Name a single law on the books that's 100% effective! Just one!
Why do you believe that we shouldn't have a law unless it's 100% effective?

After all, why should we have drinking / driving laws if some people still
drink and drive anyway? Lets throw them away because they don't work!

We have laws against murder but people still do it, so i suppose you believe
that we should just junk the homicide laws because they're not 100%
effective!

Use your brain instead of sounding like a numbskull.

Finally someone who gets the picture or message. No amount of legislation or
anything else for that matter is going to stop all evil doing totally. In
the case of drunken drivers the ones who get caught are by and large the
same ones over and over. They are largely marginalized people. When you
have nothing relatively what does a few months in the joint matter? Law
abiding citizens are usually those who have something to lose but even some
of them go whacko at times. The same is the case for guns if the people who
use them now had something to lose and some hope for the future they might
not be inclined to jeopardize it. Laws won't make any difference to them in
that situation.

Great move, when the very constituency your trying to keep finds

they really proposing to do for them??? Oh right, ban the already

Who? Street gangs? This isn't about street gangs, it's about a major
source of illegal weapons on the street; handguns stolen from collections,
guns that serve no other purpose than to be played with by their owners or
stolen and used in crimes. Why are you trying to cloud the issue with

Judging from her comments, she's clueless when it comes to understanding this

So is it your contention that those criminals who are so intent on obtaining
an illegal handgun that they break into a home and steal from collections
will be unable to find another way of obtaining one -- for example,
smuggling one from the US? Why would that be?

Read on in this thread. Law enforcement sources (Metro Police Services for
one) make this claim using guns recovered from crimes and traced back to
their owners after they were reported stolen. That will have to suffice
unless you want to dispute it further and take it up with Metro Police

crimes are ideed smuggled in from the US.

Eliminate the guns and criminals will be using knives, baseball bats,
golf clubs, etc, etc, etc. You can even commit a violent crime with

I wasn't disputing it -- I was asking for a cite. It appears that you don't
have one.

In any case, let's suppose it is true, and also that a significant
proportion of these stolen handguns are stolen from private collectors as
opposed to gun stores. So what? Is it your contention that banning private
citizens from owning handguns in private collections will have a material
effect on the number of criminals obtaining handguns? On the face of it,
that seems rather unlikely.

so what if they are means something. the guns will take the shortest

Your "gun" problem is really a criminal problem. Your guns come from all
over the world and are brought into your country by criminals for use by
other criminals.

You'll get just as far blaming the US for your crime problem as the US has
in blaming Columbia for our drug problem.

You're free to ignore the real world and me if we make you uncomfortable.

Good luck.

You speak of the origin of stolen hand guns. However that seems a pretty useless
statistic since we have no way of knowing what proportion of illegal guns in
circulation are bought or stolen. We can tell what proportion of stolen guns
are from dealers , collectors and individuals but without knowing how many guns
are illegally imported no one can say what proportion of illegal guns in
circulation are illegally imported or stolen from A. B. or C

How could anyone really know? No one keeps track of the true numbers of
illegally imported guns because they do not know.

Have you lost track of the discussion entirely? No one has ever grabbed a kid on

Sources of Firearms Misused and Recovered in Crime

The sources of illicit firearms vary from region to region but one thing is
clear: most illegal firearms begin as legal firearms.(W. Cukier and S

Global Black Market in Small Arms. London: Zed Books. W. Cukier, T Sarkar and T

<end quote>

And also:

<begin quote>
Some examples of the ways in which firearms can "leak" from legal shipments into
"illicit" markets include:

On May 2, 2000 authorities laid charges in what they believed to be a large
international smuggling operation. Over 23,000 firearms and their components
were seized after a clerk alerted her supervisor to the registration of over
1,000 firearms by a single owner. Canadian and US police laid charges in the
case in which individuals allegedly attempted to illegally export more than
1,200 fully assembled Garand M1s along with over 20,000 rifle components from
Canada to the US. Some weapons and components appeared to have been mislabelled
as auto parts. The investigation has gained international recognition for
Canada’s gun registration laws.

A Montreal area import/export company (Century International Arms) has
frequently announced the theft of thousands of prohibited and restricted weapons
- after police arrested individuals using them in the commission of a crime.
Since 1988, 26 separate incidents of theft, loss or disappearance of guns were
reported in connection with Century I.A. In March of 1994, a shipment of 2,000
Chinese Norinko AK-47s headed for Century I.A. were confiscated at the American
border because they had been declared as hunting rifles.
One criminal investigation, "Operation Pinball", uncovered an extensive network
of "law abiding" gun owners without previous criminal records who were buying
guns legally and selling them illegally. Over 2,000 firearms were seized and a
dozen arrests were made in one of the largest seizures in Canadian history.

<end quote>

And please remember this is an old site. The situation isbelieved to be much
worse now but research and reports take time to get caught up.

Dennis why are you quoting shit written by Wendy Cukier ?

She's a horrible,ultra-feminist WHITE MALE HATER!

She HATES white men!

How do I know this is true?

Because I knew a young woman who took some of Cukier's courses years
ago at Ryerson College ,and she said it was a non stop slagfest against
MEN!

Furthermore Wendy Cukier wasn't born in Canada, and she's setting the
Gun Laws by which we are all supposed to live?

Guns have been freely available in Canada for FIVE HUNDRED years which
is 460 years LONGER than anybody named Cukier ever set foot on our
shores!

These gun laws are being made to ATTACK white men.

90 percent of all legal gun owners in Canada are white males,5 percent
are aboriginals(which by the way aren't TOUCHED by the gun laws),and
the other 5 percent are women and people of colour.

Yet 90 percent of gun crimes across Canada are being committed by
people of colour and nobody says anything about it.

They just pass MORE and MORE stupid gun laws that do absolutely nothing
to stop crime and do everything to fuck up the WHITE MAN.

I suspect that 50% is a figment of somebody's imagination but even if true
, does it make any difference in the real world.
It's been the history of law breakers, that when one source of a commodity
dries up, they simply find another.
Hand guns for example can be manufactured in somebody's garage, re the old
Saturday night special.
It's been the same with booze , drugs, women, etc. Shut down a marijuana
grow and another starts up.
The politicians have to address the root cause and instead they're making it
worst, even if only by dithering..
Of course, when the bad guys know that all law abiding citizens have been
disarmed, they'll only need a baseball bat and they can expand their
operations...into you home.
I have friends that go to Trinidad for holidays and stay in private homes,
all with barred windows. THAT is Canada's future if the Liberals continue to
have their way.

Comparisons need to make sense Larry. The discussion is about deaths caused by
guns. Has anyone ever grabbed a kid on a To street and smoked him to death?

There is no connection between deaths caused by drunk drivers and deaths caused
by guns except in the sense of comparable modes of mortality. Obviously, there
are unjust deaths by many causes. Each one of them needs to be addressed with
appropriate strategies to reduce those deaths.

One such appropriate strategy is to remove handguns from society to effectively
reduce mortality from that mode.

Dislike of a person would not affect my consideration of that persons arguments.

If you were semi-literate you would have noted that the web page was offered as
source for factual information in the way of studies.

However, your comments mean that what you believe to be true is determined by
who says it more that by what is said or how solid the factual evidence is.

That being the case, I see no reason to read the rest of your post. By your own

Good luck with your gun fairy beliefs. They will not save one citizen from a gun
