I am trying the find out when the decision was made to change Escadrille
to Escadron. I think it was around 1987, but not sure. I am updating my
crest collection and want to move the crests in the era that they belong to.
I have dates for the squadrons redesignations and renumbering, but can't
find anything on the internet.
To give you an idea of my work, look at http://jfchalifoux.com, under
CAF - Squadrons - then follow the link for 400 Squadron.
Thanks,
JF Chalifoux
PS Just in case I can't access the newsgroup, my email address is

The authority for names in either official language is not from
translations but from Ministerial Organization Order (the Ghost of Rick
Collins haunts us yet -- proper thing, too). These are usually available
through the Access to Information Act.
Using Termium, I see that the translation of "squadron" varies according
to context, "escadron" in army and air force uses and "flotille" for the
navy. The air force translation is from the "NATO glossary of
abbreviations used in NATO documents and publications, AAP-15(F) MOD 01 /
[compiled by the NATO Standardization Agency] = Glossaire OTAN des
abréviations utilisées dans les documents et publications OTAN, AAP-15(F)
MOD 01 / [réalisé par l'Agence OTAN de normalisation]. -- [Bruxelles :
OTAN], 2000."
"Escadrille" is translated as "flight" and Termium draws it from the CF
Manual of Abbreviations. The term always makes me think of French gym
shoes.

In case any of this helps.. Others with "BLUE" backing, may provide
more precise answers to your question.. Only real Squadron I remember,
was 800 Black Forest Squadron... ;-)
