Michael:
These are very familiar names. I was in Grade 11 that year at 2 Wing
and played hockey with Jack Gibson, who later went on to play in the World
Hockey Association, so I'm told. Mr. Tret was our history teacher that
year.
I've only run into a couple of ex-2 Wingers in the years since: Don
Whyte was one I recall seeing in Ottawa later in the 60's. I'm wondering
what became of Louise Schwab. I've been back to 2 Wing since, in 1985;
it's now rundown, scarcely recognizable, and rather sad when you consider
all the special memories.

Hi Gerry!
Thanks for your response. You're right, you were in Grade 11 that
year. And I remember Louise and Don, although I didn't hang around
with them.
Ian Phillips was a friend of mine, and he was in your class, but I
haven't seen or heard from him since 1963. Do you still
have your yearbook from back then? I have mine, and it brings back a
lot of good memories from that time.
Michael
Hi Michael,
Yes, I dug the yearbook out and dusted it off. I recall Ian Phillips,
but I didn't know him particularly well: a tall, slim, and quiet sort?
There are others I'm curious about: Bob Scott, Bruce Lauder, Butch
Stirling, Lesley Foster, all from Grade 11 that year. It's a pity we
don't see much 2 Wing traffic on this news group.

Hello again!
Yes, Ian was pretty quiet. I remember him having flushed cheeks and a
Scottish accent. I just got another e-mail from BRIAN CRAWFORD who
was in Grade 7y in 1962. Apparently, he saw the 10x class photo, too.

I lived at 2 Wing from 1960-1963 but was only in Grade 3
when I left. I was told we had to leave because France
dropped out of NATO, can anyone elaborate on this?
My mother and some of her friends attended a 2 Wing
reunion about 7 years ago, I think it was held in
Vancouver. She is still close to some of the people
we lived with in the PMQs all that time ago. I wish
I had been older when we went so I would have remembered
more about living in France. I still enjoyed it a lot
even as a small child, and have great memories.
We traveled to Le Havre by ship from Halifax, and had a
rough 5-day crossing in March. We saw the lights of Paris
from the train taking us to Metz, but never returned to see
the city by daylight. At first, we lived in an apartment in
a house in the village of St. Avold. They had running water
but the bathroom was in a separate outbuilding. I attended
nursery school in French in the village and don't recall
having any problem communicating, although my French is
poor now. The parish priest told my mother stories about
WWII, which had ended only 15 years earlier.
Later we lived in the PMQs, which were low-rise apartment
buildings and quite nice. I started kindergarden there and
would walk across the playground to the base school. My
teachers were wonderful; I always felt the teachers in the
base schools were very special people, both in 2 Wing and
later in Bagotville. The playground contained a bunker which
had been part of the Maginot line.
We did some touring and sightseeing in France and other
countries, but not as much as most military families.
I remember picnicing on local bread and cheese by the
side of the road, delicious! My parents had friends at
Baden-Baden and I remember driving through the Black
Forest to get there. Our final summer, we went camping
in Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg. I remember that
trip best: windmills, fields of tulips, the Atomium,
the canals of Amsterdam, the hospitality of the Dutch
people to Canadians.

The opinions expressed are my own.
I too was at 2 Wing - from 1958-1962. Perhaps we met, who knows. We lived
in the PMQs above St. Avold in E block (E13) to be exact. Some of the
families who lived close by include the Gilberts, Dellars, Dumvilles, and
Browns. In particular I knew Roi, Gai, Lan, and Lynn Gilbert, Brian,
Struan, and Martin Brown, and Larry Dumville. Wish I could remember more.
Just mentioning these names in case you happened to remember them
yourself. I realize you were a bit younger than I was (I was 8-12), but,
you never know. I went to school both in the PMQs and on the base (grades
4-7). I don't remember any Maginot bunkers near the playground though. The
bunkers I remember were outside of the PMQs. Yes, most of the teachers
were great, although I was not that impressed with Mr. Andrews. Some other
teachers I remember include Mr. Veysey (sp?), Miss Tolman, Miss Engmann,
and Miss Gibson.
For me, those years were very special as well. What a way to see Europe. I
remember a wonderful Christmas in Austria (Erwald I think was the town),
and we travelled (we camped) to Spain, Italy, and of course Belgium (I too
remember the atomium), Luxembourg, Holland, and did lots and lots of
shopping in the PX at Kaiserslautern Germany. I certainly remember the
Dutch friendliness and hospitality. My folks have stayed in contact with
a few familiies. They're fading away now, as are our many friends in
France.
>I was told we had to leave because France
>dropped out of NATO, can anyone elaborate on this?
Yes, I think I can elaborate. De Gaulle, being very independence-minded,
hated the fact that NATO wanted to bring nuclear weapons into France. De
Gaulle wanted full control over any such weapons. Of course Canada, as
well as other NATO countries in France couldn't let this happen, so NATO
bases were closed down. France actually withdrew from NATO in 1966.

Great thread! Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. My name is
Robbie Bobby (nee Roberta Hogg) and I was in 2 Wing in 1963-64 with my
family. I was in grade 7 that year (Miss Pat Byle's class) so you
probably won't remember me, but my older sister Marney was in grade 12,
and my younger sister Lori was in grade 1. I recognised lots of names
in your class list, but can't say where most of them are now,
unfortunately. My Dad was OIC of 137 Transport Squadron - Bristol
Freighters, and we ended up in 2 Wing after Langar, England closed
down. I am in contact by e-mail with Ric (Richard) Chapman, who now
lives in Truro, Nova Scotia, and would have been in grade 9 I think that
year. Denise Trewin married an American GI she met over there and they
were parents of twins (boys I believe). My parents kept contact with
hers after coming back to Canada. My sister, Marney, dated another 2
Wing brat - Jim Webster, who would have been in grade 11 that year I
believe, and they married a few years later. (still are too!). Anybody
remember the Savelle boys - there were 4 of them, I believe - can only
remember Harry and Jim tho. After 2 Wing closed down, we were
transferred to Marville and were there for a year before my Dad was
transferred to Gimli. Wish I had an old yearbook to jog my memory!
Anyways, great thread! You should consider looking into the Brat
Chatroom on irc.xnet.org - more new brats showing up there every night
and there are some really great times to be had there - super friendly
bunch of brats! Hope to maybe see some 2 Wing brats there eventually.
Kindest Regards,
Robbie2

Jennifer. Read your posting and thought it was neat to hear from
someone else who had been at Bagotville. Did you take your schooling on
the base, or in one of the surrounding towns. I too am a military
brat and was in Germany, 4wing from 64 - 68 and Arvida from 70 - 73.
