Are there any 'brats' out there who lived in Goose Bay ?

I'd be interested in some of the teachers like Miss Chisholm, Mr. Hogan,
Mrs. McKay etc.
I left right after school ended in June 1967, so its safe to assume that
most of the teachers were still there the next year. I believe Mr. Burke
was still the principal in 68. For the first year after we moved to Goose,
we lived in a 'steelox' at 85 Park Drive. In July 1965, we moved over to a
bungalow at 42 Park Drive. We had a fire break in our back yard. By the
time we left in 67, we had grass growing on our front and back yards.

I remember two other families that lived near us there: Butch & Bonnie
Langille and Zeita & Clyde Bailey. Do you remember them by chance?

Were these the Langilles that lived around 38 Park Drive. Their father was
in the Army and worked in the Ration Depot. I think one of the kids names'
was Rickky.

The guy on the other side of our Steel Locks was an MSE Op by the name of Le
Blanc. A couple of other names that come to mind are Rod and Rick Hinks as
well as Ted French. Their fathers were drivers. Do you remember the smoke
from forest fires each summer drifting in to the PMQ areas ? My father was
in the CE Section. The first year in Goose, he was sent out to the VIP camp
at Eagle River. You should have seen the trout that he came back with.
Goose was a virtual paradise for aircraft lovers. Probably the most
exciting being the Vulcan when it was flying low-level. I had the
unfortunate experience of being only a couple of hundred yards away from the
USAF C-133 Cargomaster that crashed on the 7th of November 1964. There was
a small group of us Scouts coming back from a hike by way of the perimeter
road by the POL tank farm (the big 100,000 gallon overhead fuel tanks by the
docks). It happened around 17:10 hours. The sky lit up from horizon to
horizon and just as quick as you can blink your eye, we were hit by a blast
of hot air. Seven crew members were killed in front of us. The first thing
to come to mind was a nuclear explosion. You have to understand that at
that time the threat of a nuclear war was very real on constantly on
people's minds.
The winter carnivals were great. The ice sculpture contest was a fiercely
fought one. My dad has photos from the 1965 carnival. Do you remember the
big purple dragon that the Labrador Club made ? Goose does not get any
thing close to the annual snowfall accumulation of 14 feet that it did back
in the early sixties. The big Churchill Reservoir has radically altered the
weather pattens in the region. I was up there on temporary duty in 1996 and
we got a big thunderstorm with heavy hail. That was unheard of when I was a
brat there. We had one clap of thunder in three years back then.
Was anyone in Air Cadets there ? I spent a year in Air Cadets from
September 1966 to May 1967. Forgot to mention that we originally flew in to
Goose on a RACF Cosmo out of Dorval Airport in Montreal. We used to fly on
this aircraft when my father took leave. We left Goose on the 22nd of June
on an Air Canada Vanguard. The pilot got permission to fly over Expo 67
prior to landing. Does anyone remember Eskimo Joe. He was a civilian
laborer on the station. On the weekends you would see him playing his small
accordion around the Astra Theatre for the kids prior to the show starting.
Incidentally, the bowling alley eventually became a Chinese restaurant of
all things. A lot of my friends used to work there setting up the pins as
there was no mechanical system in place. I think they got 50 cents an hour.
Anyhow, it burned down in the late seventies or early eighties
Well that is enough rambling for now. I'm looking forward to hearing other
stories from fellow Goose Brats.
Cheers...Chris
