The two bases I lived on out west here, Sea Island and Jericho are
gone. No home to go and look at and actually see it falling apart or
grown smaller.

Well Louise I was there from 1956 to 1958 before heading for Greenwood. I
went to Banting Memorial HS in Alliston and you think you feel old :o)

This is also the first time I have found anyone who lived in Camp Borden
close to the time period I lived there. We lived on the Army side of the
base, 52-14th Street, from 1955 to to the late summer of 1958. I was in
grades 5,6 and 7. I remember the names of a couple of people I went to
school with during this time, Diane Fowler and Gary MacIntyre, but not any
others at the moment.

So Al, have you been back to Alliston??? I was there this past summer
and there is the greatest little Fish and Chip Place on the main street.
I remember my Dad driving from Borden into Alliston every Saturday
morning so I could take my ballet lessons and my older brother was on a
hockey team. Unfortunately, after being away for 40 years, I couldn't
recognize a thing. Not even the road into Angus, or Alliston or Barrie.
How disappointing. The good news is that as more people write about the
bases, the more memories come back.

Does anyone from Borden remember the summer Candy Shack? You could buy
penny candy (yes, you actually paid a penny for candy.......) and for
a dime you ended up with a full little brown paper bag. I have no idea
of why I remember that except I "worked" there for one week with my Dad
and helped him serve the kids. Of course my pay consisted of all the
candy I could eat. What a life!

LOL just think how new the school was when I went there.
One of the things I remember with a fondness (believe or not :o)) was the bus
ride from PMQ and back each day. It was a time of fun and songs and
camaraderie. We never got in trouble. (maybe the drivers were not as uptight as
they are now)
It would be nice to go back and see the place. I just might do that this
summer. :o)

You'll probably find that it hasn't changed much. I remember I couldn't wait
to leave for the bright lights of the big city. When my husband and I
started looking for land to build a house last year, that was the first
place we looked - too expensive! (We wound up buying in Oro).
If you do decide to visit, give me a shout - I'll meet you for coffee at
Timmy's (right across from Banting - if only it was there when I was.....)

We lived in the area from '60 - '67. My little brother was born in Stayner
('61) and my little sister ('64) in Alliston.

My earliest memories are of living in a farm house on top of the hill just
past the cemetery on the road out to Wasaga Beach. What a huge house. I
also remember living in a house just a couple blocks from the Malt shop in
Wasaga Beach and in the house right next to the Supertest Station on Highway
90 towards Barrie.

I started school at Our Lady of Grace; sang the National Anthem every
morning and went to the Catholic Church every Friday.

Of course, there are a ton more memories from that time that come rushing
back each time I'm back in the area. Sometimes makes me feel like moving
back. Maybe some day.

Just thought I'd plug in my two cents worth. Have fun everybody.

Hello from Saskatchewan

Just found this group tonight.. Very interesting! At last some people that
might be able to relate to not knowing where home really is and the strong
desire to always want to pack up and move.. :-)

My last name is Crowston.

I lived in Camp Borden in around 1958 - 61.. I lived across from the school.
I seem to me,.it was School St. ?? There were streets on two sides of the
school so that could be right. I remember the there were bushes out the back
of the school grounds and then a riding trail and stable on the other side
of that.. The boys spent a lot or time playing in those bushes, building
forts and stuff like that. Gee that was a long time ago.

I spent a lot of time in Saskatoon. Dad kept getting transferred in and out
of Saskatoon so that became the closes thing to home. We when through a time
where we moved every year. The worst year 57 - 58 I went to 4 different
school.

Hi
Ken,
Can you remember the name of the school? Because I think there were
alot for one Army base. My sister and I went to Fredrick Campbell
public school and my other sister and brother went to highschool,I
don't know the name.We lived right across the street, we had alittle
path way to walk through the woods,it opened onto the playground. We
lived in 21 Corriano Cres.,we were not too far from the LX,and the
little mall with a barber and a
dentist. Our nextdoor neighbors name
was Burke and we had family friends named Fullam(not sure of
spelling).
Take care
Carole:)

Hi Ken,

It seems like we were in Borden at the same time - 58-63 for me, then
on to Marville France, Lahr Germany and back to Canada (68). I lived at
88 School Street and started kindergarten in 58 at the Air Force school.
One of the neighbours was Donna Gillespie, who I used to hang around
with. Behind our house was the field where the tanks used to go for
practice. I remember always being warned not to venture out to far
because a tank could run us all over. but of course, we didn't listen
(the best blueberries were in those fields!)

I don't recall your name but I will check with the rest of my family.
So, welcome to the newgroup!

Hi Borden
Pals,
Wouldn't be nice to get a map of the base somehow? We could all see
exactly where we lived. My dad was a mechanic on the base and I
remember those fields Louise was talking about. I also remember the
berries, when my mother wanted to keep us busy she would send us out
to pick berries. The best blueberries and wild raspberries and choke-
cherries in the world were on that base.My mom made a wonderful berry
pie with whatever made it home (we couldn't help
ourselves). Ken how old were you when you lived in
Borden, because my brother use to go build forts and stuff all
the time.Unlike you we lived in one place for maybe nine years or
so.Lahr was the shortest posting we had(four years)but I'm glad we
where there or I never would have meet my

Hi guys..

This is really digging deep into the old mind.. I have to do some checking
out to get the dates down a bit closer. May mom and dad can fill things in a
bit for me. Dad was an instructor at Borden. His area was aero engines, a
mechanic by trade.

I was an air force brat, so if there were two sides for the PMQs I would
have been on that side.. I remember our street being School St. and the
school (gr. 1 - 8) was right across the street, out our back door . We were
across from a driveway that went into the school yard. There was a sidewalk
on one side of our house that went from the street to a park. The front or
our house faced into this park which had houses around it on all sides. In
the summer they would run play ground programs in this park, which has a lot
of big pine or spruce trees.

I remember the desert well. Were not supposed to play there but how many of
use ever listened. There was one place where the desert came in behind some
of the PMQs. We use to dig pits and forts in there. One day a couple of
tanks came driving through there, catching us by surprise, almost scared the
you know what out of us.
It took a while getting use to all the explosions when the army was having
exercises.

I have got the dates pinned down exactly but I believe I was in grade 4 -5
and was there for a few years. It was likely around 57 -59 and I would have
been 9 -10 years old. I remember also that they were flying the Arrow in and
out of the base around that time so that might be a help at pinning down the
date.

. I don't remember a lot of names.. That was always one of my bad points..
:-) One do I remember was something like Johnny Beachum.. He was kind of a
gang leader, well what we called a gang in those days.. The initiation was
stealing the chain from the drain plug in the washroom. All the guys in his
gang wore one of these chains on their wrists. Strange the things that I can
still remember but still a lot missing. :-)

I know I was involved in Cubs. I found some pictures this evening, from
Borden and cub camp. I will look them over better and scan some of them.
When I get a chance I will put them up one of my web sites..

Have a great week..

If you haven't heard about it and are interested, let me know and I will
send you all the details (yes, I am on the Committee!). So far, over
850 registered and I am sure there will be some that you know.

Louise

PS. If you ever get back to borden, go to the guard house at the
entrance to the base and they can give you a map.

Thanks Jean,

Great maps! Hard to believe how well I was able to remember the base. I had
it all in my mind very much like the maps show.

So looking at the map, I lived on the south side and yes, it was School
Street. My house was the second from the corner of School and Willow. There
was a sidewalk beside our house that went from School St. to the park The
park was in the middle of School, Willow Maple and Helmlock with a side walk
going all around the outer edge. I was there when they made this cement
sidewalk. That was over 40 years ago.. :-)

Hi Casey
You brought back a lot of memories for me, as I was also in Borden
around that time. I lived on Maple street on the other end of the park u
mentioned. One of my most vivid memories was chasing the mosquito tractor
around the streets when they were spraying. (maybe that's why my memory is
so lousy lately). anyways thanks for the old memories

Hi Larry,

Yep.. I remember that well running and riding our bikes through the fog...
Nobody ever told us it was bad for our health. Amassing any of us lived as
they never made a big deal out of a lot of things we now hear about all the
time.

My memory is great when thinking about stuff that happened years ago... but
what was it I was suppose to be doing right now??? I know I came into the
room for something, sat down at the computer refreshed the NG and here I
am.. :-) Oh, yah, I was getting something and going to work.. :-) :-) Good
thing I work for myself and have all night to get the job done! Getting old
is lots of fun! Any way, I count my blessings, I have good health and
haven't lost any necessary parts.

I found a couple of pics for Borden and area that I will try to get scanned
and up on the web later this week. Maybe we can collect some more pics and
try to put some of the pieces together. I have lots of space on the severe,
might as well put it to good use.

I don't remember the Chat Pad. Thanks for the map, Jean.

I lived at 16 Cedar Crescent (South Side) from '69 to '72. The high
school was BBCI (Base Borden Collegiate Institute) where I attended
grades 9 through to 1 week of grade 12.

I always remember the Friday night scramble to make the 11 p.m. shuttle
bus back to the "air force" side. The bus was always packed with
incoherent teenagers.

There was a club on the south side that had snooker and ping pong tables
(next to the golf course). Anyone remember it's name?

I worked one summer as a pot scrubber at the officer's mess. The food
was sure better than what they served over at the junior rank's mess 8-(

Does anyone remember Mr. McConney (spelling?). He taught Science at
BBCI; the best teacher I ever had.

Hi
Louise,
I would love to go to the reunion, but I'm still trying to
convince my husband. Our problem is we go to Ottawa to visit my family
so we're only there for a short time.We didn't want to go for both
the Friday night German Festival or the Sunday get together. We'd like
to go to the dinner on Saturday but paying $220.00 for one night
seems like alot of money.Plus we're bring the children ,and to leave
them with my aging parents is alot it ask of them.If there is a way
to pay for just the one night, we'd go for sure. I even thought we
could go just to say hello to some friends after the dinner, just to
pop in for an hour or so.Please let me know how we can manage to do
this, because it would be alot of fun ,and I would like to meet
you.
Talk to you
soon, Carole:)

Hi Casey

Glad to hear back from you. I lived beside the Marchildon clan, don't know
if u remember them or not, but they sure had a gaggle of kids. Still in
contact with Dominick though....I also remember the riding stables that were
on the base. Lots of memories but they only come back in dribbs and drabbs.
Lancaster club where the fries and gravy seemed to be the best in the world,
and only 15 cents to go to the movies. Man talk about aging myself. Hope to
hear back from you maybe somemore old memories will come crawling back. Have
pictures of my fellow classmates when I was there will have to get them up
on a site. never know who might be in one of them. until then take care.....

Hi Jean,
Life sure seemed so much simpler than didn't it....all the things that
happened then like the mosquito killer fog, and other happenings that we
just assumed were normal, and today if a kid licks a sucker the wrong way,
his parents are suing the company for putting a stick on the the end of
it....bring back the older days for me...

I was caught by the address. I also lived at 52 14th Street in the early 50's, we left in '54 I believe, I was 7 at the time. I have a vague recollection of them painting the whole street (only the army would do that), changing the colour of the house from brown to blue while I was at school. I was totally confused when I got home.
