Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could help a poor confused soul who has just
arrived from the UK!

I have an ADSL router/modem and am trying to set it up with a Telus
highspeed connection. It's a Mentor router/modem (bought in the UK)
with a Conexant chipset (Firmware Version: ETHADSL_USB_080902_REL9).
The setup screen offers the following encapsulation options (and many,
many other options too):

PPPoA VC-Mux
PPPoA LLC
1483 Bridged IP LLC
1483 Routed IP LLC
1483 Bridged IP VC-Mux
1483 Routed IP VC-Mux
Classical IP over ATM
PPPoE VC-Mux
PPPoE LLC
PPPoE None

I have no idea what any of these mean, but unfortunately Telus
technical support don't seem to either. They tell me I should just be
using DHCP, but this isn't an option offered here. Does this mean my
router/modem is incompatible with Telus?

There are also username/password settings but Telus told me they don't
use these and I should leave them blank.

There is also a diagnostic screen, if I run it (for example with PPPoA
VC-Mux, the setting I used in the UK) then I get the following
results:

Diagnostic Test

Checking LAN Connection
Testing Ethernet LAN connection : PASS HELP

Checking ADSL Connection
Testing ADSL Synchronization : PASS HELP

Checking Circuit 0 for Network Connection
Test ATM OAM Segment Loop Back : PASS HELP
Test ATM OAM End-to-End Loop Back : PASS HELP
Test Ethernet connect to ATM : PASS HELP
Test simple ppp session 0 PPP Layer connection : FAIL HELP
Test simple ppp session 0 IP connect to PPP : SKIPPED HELP

Testing Internet Connection
Ping primary DNS : SKIPPED HELP
Query DNS for www.conexant.com : SKIPPED HELP
Ping www.conexant.com : SKIPPED HELP

Sadly the HELP option doesn't actually work, nor is there any support
offered by Mentor as far as I can tell.

So any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks
Dave

Hi,
If your not using PPPoE, which I gather from what the tech told you,
then put the modem to
1483 Bridged IP VC-Mux
Make sure the vpi is 0 and the vci is 35.
Also, I believe in the UK, the tip and ring are on the outside pair, not
the inside, so you might need a converter (or make one yourself).

Telus uses VCI 33. Bell uses VCI 35. Everything else looks about
right. 1483 Bridged IP. I have a Dlink Telus modem I can pull the
configuration out of if this doesn't work for the original poster.

I see the original message was posted in Edmonton (at least the dialup
IP you connected to is in the edmonton modem pool). If Dave wants to
drop me a private email I can give you a dump of that modem
configuration or you can even meet me to run some tests with your
equipment. (This interests me so I would like to help out)

Hi Ry, thanks for your suggestion:

Unfortunately this didn't seem to work:

Diagnostic Test

Checking LAN Connection
Testing Ethernet LAN connection : PASS HELP

Checking ADSL Connection
Testing ADSL Synchronization : PASS HELP

Checking Circuit 0 for Network Connection
Test ATM OAM Segment Loop Back : PASS HELP
Test ATM OAM End-to-End Loop Back : PASS HELP

Sorry, I have no idea what this means! Is it cheap/easy to get hold of
one these?

BTW I had a similar-ish problem in the UK when I tried to setup the
router with Virgin ADSL, and it was caused by an incorrect username
(bl...@virgin.net instead of bl...@adsl.virgin.net). I wonder if
something similar could be happening here? Telus tech support tell me
that no username/password is required, but I'm not sure I believe
them!

Thanks
Dave

PS Apologies if this post has appeared twice, my dial-up connection
just dumped me.

I didn't read the status, your fine with the tip and ring as you have sync.

I'm not sure how telus works out there, so I can't comment if they use
dhcp or pppoe. Sorry.

I sent him the configuration of a Telus modem and he says he got it
working.

I asked Dave to post a message listing the configurations that worked
for anyone else interested in using unsupported equipment.

Personally I have been able to also get it working on an internal ADSL
modem previously configured for Bell that was built into a Dell computer
before so I knew it was possible.
