Primus DSL blocked ports

I wonder if anyone can confirm this. I recently moved and signed up for
DSL service with Primus.

Before, when I was using Rogers, I didn't trust their SMTP servers. I used
the one that came with Windows 2000 Pro IIS for outgoing mail only and it
has worked well. However, since I moved, I can no longer use my SMTP
server to send mail. The item in the event logs reads:

Message delivery to the remote domain 'yahoo.com' failed for the following
reason: The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt.

I can telnet to port 25 of my SMTP server from another machine behind the
router without problems. My email software also didn't give me any errors.
However, my messages don't get delivered and they stay in the "queue"
folder for days, which makes me start wondering if Primus has blocked off
port 25.

I am behind a router and port 25 does not respond to the outside. I only
use it from the inside. Maybe I will have to enable the logs and take a
look at those.

It doesn't bother me if I have to stop using my own SMTP server. In fact,
it would be better because there is one less service I have to run.
Primus's SMTP server seem to be able to send mail pretty quickly, unlike
stories which I have read about Bell's servers. However, if anyone can
tell me if it's true that port 25 is blocked off, I'd really appreciate it.

Thank you!

Yes it's blocked. It only took effect a couple of weeks ago. Below is
the email I received about it which was probably before you signed up.
Though they don't say they're blocking the ports they make it quite
clear that you have to use the primus smtp server to send email.

Dear valued customer,

Effective: December 15, 2003

In an effort to reduce spam that affects all customers ability to use
the
Internet effectively, we are making improvements to our email platform
requiring all email to be routed through the Primus email platform only.

What does this mean to you?

As long as you are using your primus.ca address for sending and
receiving
email or using any other web mail applications such as hotmail or yahoo,
this will not affect you at all.

In fact, for almost all Primus Internet customers this will result in a
welcome reduction of unsolicited email.

If however you are affected by this change and are unable to send mail
you
can simply change your mail setting to use Primus mail servers:

Your outbound mail server should be set to: smtp.primus.ca

Thank you for your understanding. We appreciate your business.

Sincerely,

Primus Canada

Thanks for the reply. I guess in one way, it's a good thing. Like I said
previously, it doesn't bother me. I am even happy that there's a mail server
that is more than semi-reliable. Unlike Bell's which had a lot of problems,
and Rogers' which gives out way too much information in its headers.
