I have been talking to sympatico tech support, and their billing office and
both say "We cannot reduce your monthly fees if you have your own modem".
However on their website, in their FAQ section
(http://www.bell.ca/shop/application/commercewf?origin=noorigin.jsp&event=li
nk(goto)&content=/jsp/content/personal/search/faq_detail.jsp&FAQ_ID=77) it
states "Bell does not offer an outright sale option for the DSL modem,
however customers may choose to provide their own compatible DSL modem
instead of renting it from Bell for $10 per month. Please note that DSL
modems are not yet readily available through computer/electronic outlets. "
To me this says rent from us for $10 or buy your own, or am i reading this
out of context?

Talk to a supervisor.
Rogers charges $10 a month too, but then they give you $10 credit, so it's a
free rental.
Does Bell do the same?

If you have your own, and they charge a rental fee, and you are not renting,
then complain all the way up to a VP if you have to.....also you might want
to drop the hint that you will contact Silverman Helps and expose this to
the public - that often gets some additional attention.

Further, Tech Support has nothing to do with billing. Call the Business
Office - it helps if you contact the right department!

Someone mentionned to me that if you pretend you want to cancel the service, they
will ask you why and you tell them you're going to an ISP where you don't have to
rent the modem. They may then drop the 10$ charge.

I called the other day and they give a 10$ discount but it's a 1 year contract.

The other option is to buy a Dell computer and get a free modem and then you
have the 35$ rate after the free month with Sympatico High Speed.

I'm guessing that much like Rogers, Bell doesn't actually charge the
modem rental fee. Therefore, supplying your own would in fact have no
effect on your bill.

They both have an official modem rental rate so that one day, if they
decide to charge it, it look like less of a new fee and more like the
end of a promotion.

No, not really. When Rogers started - Cable modems were not available for
the retail market. Thus there was no option to buy - you could only rent. So
they waived the rental fee. When Bell introduced DSL, the DSL modems were
available in the retail market, and thus you always had the option to buy.
So your guess is just that a guess - and as such it is wrong.

Second generation cable modems are available in the retail market. If you
buy your own, you may get better throughput, but don't count on it on the
Roger's network. Problem with Rogers is that even though they have a fibre
backbone, chances are that you are going over the air at some point, and
that is going to be slow. Bell does not put you over the air to bypass
shitty infrastructure, because Bell does not have a shitty infrastructure -
just Rogers.

As I said, TEch Support has nothing to do with billing. That is a business
problem - not a technical one. Call the business office!

CRAP - you got a point there. can anyone whose paying the 44.95$ rate find
out? i tried asking them but i cant get a straight answer and dont wanna
push it cus im currently paying 24.95 on a promo rate. if they do let the
10$ fee slide then sympatico will become a really competitive dsl provider.

Check out ebay for a cheap DSL modem.

A friend of mine picked one up for cheap and he says it works great with
Bell.

Take a closer look at the web page.

Look under the dark bar with all the options (Customer care, Store locator
etc...)

Category: Business
Topic: High Speed

The page you are looking at is on the business side of sympatico. their offers
are different from sympaticos.

i am aware of that - ive been with 4 independant dsl providers already - but
they were all shit compared to sympatico in terms of pure reliability -
thats why i was hoping if they let u use your own modem it would give me no
reason to leave.

so the moral of the story is ?

with sympatico, it's no use to buy your own modem, cause they charge you for
rent anyway ?

Apparently the story is that their test equiptment only works with their
modems, and they want to deter people from using their own modems also
because "sympatico could change their service without warning at any time".

What does Bell have that is shitty then? Since I moved from Bell
to Rogers my connection is consistently far, far faster.

sympatico is in a wierd situation with the modem rental question. its at
risk to loses millions and millions per year. rogers and sympatico are
roughly the same price for roughly the same service. sympatico makes up
roughly 25 % ( ya give or take a couple %) in what they call modem rental.
could they remove modem rental of 10 $ and still charge the same without ppl
whining about a 25% (give or take a couple of %) price increase...bad press
for sure. i bet if they could go back your hse would cost the same without
that modem fee. hindsight is 20/20 could they pull it off while doubling the
speed of reg hse to silence critics. who knows. the reality of the situation
is that sympatico is not gonna potentially lose 10 s of millions of dollars
in any given year by letting you own your own modem. atleast thats how I see
it.

They can't complain about compatibility if you use the same brand and models that they use:
- Speedstream 5260
- Speedstream 5360
- Speedstream 5200
