whether it'd be through some webservice or through some software. But I'd
imagine the latter would be impossible, since my computer's not connected
through the phone modem. But if someone knows of some webservice in Canada,
that I could perhaps sign up for and be able to send faxes that way, I'd really
appreciate it.

But how about this scenario? While still keeping my cable modem service with
Shaw@Home, I just get a phone modem and send faxes through that from my computer
with some faxing software? Does that sound plausible? Does anyone do this out
there? TIA!

Best,
Steve

There are quite a few services that do something like that.
http://www.tpc.int/faxbyemail.html
http://www.ureach.com/
Basically they take an email message or image and relay it to
machines closest to the destination, where the email is converted and
sent via fax. Some allow you to receive faxes by email. It depends on
where you want to fax and more importantly are the documents of a
sesitive nature.

I don't see why not.

Well, I'm on DSL and not a cable modem, but...I still use my 33.6
dial-up modem for faxing, and Caller ID. I don't see why you couldn't
do the same.

Absolutely - that is what I do with WinFax on a second phone line. It
essentially gives me a dedicated fax machine (coupled with the scanner).
There are internet fax services you can subscribe to but cost is added.

Check out http://www.villagefax.com/ for internet faxing, I heard some good
things about them. I am not sure of pricing (US), you may have to enquire
about that.

If you do a lot of faxing locally, your cheapest option will still be using
a faxmodem and fax software, or a fax machine. You can get modems (33.6+)
starting at ~$20, and simple fax software ~$25+ (Winfax Lite).

There are a lot more Internet fax services now than a couple of years ago,
so the price should be dropping soon. I would be interested in finding out
how many Canadian companies offer that service.

Still OT, but since we're started....

I've had *no* trouble simultaneously running cable-internet and dial-up
connections. What I'd like to do next is to include fax capability on
the phone-line modem. Problem is, I also subscribe to Bell's voice-mail
service on the phone line. Does anyone know of a way to "steer"
incoming calls so that unanswered voice-calls go to the (Bell-CO)
voice-mail, but faxes go to a real or simulated fax receiver? Without
installing a second line, of course. There used to be some modem boxes
which did their own steering/answering but in my case the two services
are split between me and the Telco 8-)

At present I think that if either service goes off-hook, decides the
call is for the *other* service, it's then too late to backtrack. Any
ideas/confirmation?

TIA,

Geoff.

Depending on what telco you are with, and how your line is currently set up,
you might consider getting what Bell Canada calls and Ident-A-Call number.
This is a 2nd number on the same line you already have, but it has a
different ringing pattern (either 2 short or short-long-short). It can be
set up to either forward calls or not forward calls (this includes forward
non-answered ones to a voice-mail system). When you get one that does not
forward, they will never go to the mailbox, and most fax-modem software has
a ring selector built into it, so set it to answer the right ringing
pattern, and bob's your uncle :) If your software does not include ring
selector capability, there are lots of little boxes on the market that do
the same thing, mostly for $30 or so.

HTH,

Kardinal

I'm using Ident-A-Call with no forwarding on the second "line" and it's
even simpler than you describe. Set the voicemail to answer on (say) 4
rings and the fax modem to answer on a bigger number (say 6). If you
don't answer, the voice mail will pick up "line 1" after 4 rings and
ignore any number of rings on the second "line", The fax modem will pick
up after six rings on either "line" -- the phone only rings more than 4
times for the second line, however.

Kardinal and Gord,

Many thanks for those pieces of information - I didn't know about the
pseudo-2nd-line thingy! Sounds like just what I need.

You can't beat newsgroup service...... 8-)

Thanks again,

Geoff.
