Canada Revenue Agency Corruption Scandal Widens : CRA SOTW

OTTAWA - The federal government confirms that the RCMP has widened a
probe into allegations of federal auditors accepting bribes to help
tax-dodgers.
The Opposition NDP pressed the government on the matter in Question
Period Friday after the Globe and Mail and the CBC's French service
said the Mounties are investigating tax offices in Quebec
jurisdictions outside Montreal.
The Montreal office has been at the centre of an RCMP probe since
2007.
The office has been linked to Mafia infiltration, specifically related
to interference in corporate filings.
Two of the employees are alleged to have helped stash $1.7 million
into offshore accounts in tax havens.
The Canada Revenue Agency said last year it has either suspended or
fired four of its employees who have been linked to the alleged
conspiracy.
NDP industry critic Guy Caron said the findings are "troubling."
"We're hearing about a strategy of extortion, bribes paid by
contractors in exchange for a substantial reduction in their tax
assessments," Caron said in the House.
"Can the government ... tell us what measures they have taken to
tighten controls at the Canada Revenue Agency?"
Junior revenue minister Cathy McLeod acknowledged the allegations were
serious.
"An RCMP investigation into this matter is ongoing and CRA officials
are co-operating fully," she said.
"The integrity of our tax system is very important to all Canadians
and we will take all steps necessary to ensure it is protected."
Aside from Montreal, the CRA has offices in nine other Quebec
jurisdictions, including Quebec City and Gatineau, across the river
from Ottawa.
