CITIZENS COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT
167 Lisbon Avenue, Buffalo, New York 14214

Ottawa, April 5th, 1994 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Homolka - Bernardo Murders; The Government of Ontario
in Canada does not want you to read this media release.

THE CITIZENS COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT was
established today to draw attention to serious violations
of personal privacy in CANADA.

The Ontario socialist government of Premier Bob Rae has
ordered a court publication ban on the trial proceedings of
Karla Homolka and her husband Paul Bernardo who are accused
of the most heinous murders in Canadian history. Their
victims were 14-year old Leslie Mahaffy and 15-year-old
Kristen French, both of St. Catharines, Canada.

The girls were brutally tortured and subjected to sexual
acts which involved mutilation and torture. Karla Homolka
pleaded guilty to the murders. But because of a gag order
on her trial, the Canadian public is not even allowed to
know she pleaded guilty.

Government lawyers asked for the gag order (publication ban)
on trial details claiming to protect Paul Bernardo's rights
to a fair trial. Bernardo's lawyer was against the gag order.
The government also refused Bernardo a preliminary hearing,
which is standard procedure under Canadian Criminal Law.

It is the government of Ontario's intention to hold Bernardo's
trial after this falls elections and avoid any public and
electoral responsibility. The Citizens Coalition for
Responsible Government accuses the government of Ontario of a
cover-up, the details have been attached.

The Coalition, a group of Canadian citizens has established
itself in Buffalo New York to avoid the systematic harrassment
of anti-gag activities by the provinces police. At this time
we must remain anonymous since we fear detection would increase
the risk of police visits and raids to recover any banned trial
information we may have.

The risks are real. The Ontario government even tried to threaten
"A Current Affair" television program which aired details of the
trial. The broadcast of the heinous murderers was yanked from
Canadian cable outlets. This government is serious on this gag
order to the point where personal freedoms and rights are
violated.

Please help us. Were calling for a world call-collect-a-thon.
Pick up your phone and call our Attorney General, Marion Boyd
collect. The charges will not be accepted by her office, and you
won't be billed anything, but at least she'll know the world is
watching. Her office number is 1-416-326-4000 or call her boss
Bob Rae at 1-416-325-1941.

THE REMAINDER OF THIS DOCUMENT CONTAINS SUPPORTING INFORMATION
THAT IS BANNED IN CANADA BY COURT ORDER. WARNING! THE CONTENTS
OF THIS DOCUMENT COULD UPSET YOU.

In the summer of 91, 14-year old Leslie Mahaffy disappeared.
She was last seen attending a wake in honor of some school-mates
killed in a recent automobile accident. On June 29, her
cement-encased and dismembered body was found by fishermen in
Lake Gibson, southwestern Ontario, CANADA. On that same day, not
20 miles away, Paul Bernardo married Karla Homolka in a church
service near Niagara Falls, Ontario CANADA.
One year later, 15-year-old Kristen French was kidnapped off a
street in St. Catharines, Ontario. The kidnapping was committed
during daylight hours in plain view of witnesses who reported her
abduction by two people driving a cream colored Camaro. Two
weeks later, her nude body was found in a ditch on a wooded side
road outside Burlington. French's long dark hair had been shorn
off and she had been sexually abused.
The police were able to link the French and Mahaffy murders
together when it was discovered both bodies had been hobbled.
Homolka later testified her husband cut the tendons of his
victims ankles while they were still alive to prevent them from
escaping.
The peculiar trademark launched one of the most intensive
manhunts in Canadian history. A special hour-long TV show was
aired where investigating detectives appeared alongside forensic
scientists. Evidence was presented, including an artists'
drawing of one of the suspects.
The entire episode rocked the country and terrified residents
of Southern Ontario. Autopsies revealed French was killed hours
before her body was discovered. It was suspected French was kept
alive for two weeks before being brutally executed. Karla
Homolka later confirmed French was confined in the
Bernardo/Homolka home.
The big break came when Metro Police announced Paul Bernardo
was arrested in Toronto on 43 rape and sexual assault charges.
Media speculation fueled by police investigators resulted in
rumors Bernardo might be charged with the French/Mahaffy
murders. A few days after his arrest, the Niagara Police said it
would only be a matter of time before he was charged with the sex
slayings.
Bernardo had been under surveillance for many months prior to
his arrest. Durham Regional Police knew as early as 1991 he was
a suspect, but had no hard evidence. They also had difficulty
coordinating their investigation with the Green Ribbon Task
force, according to press reports.
Police had a second suspect under surveillance, but insisted
the individual did not pose a threat to society. Shortly after
Bernardo was charged, his wife was taken into custody for two
days, and then released. During this time period she provided
the crown with evidence against her husband. Karla Homolka was
then charged with two counts of manslaughter in the deaths of
French and Mahaffy. On July 5, she pleaded guilty and was
sentenced to 12 years in prison. With good behavior she'll be
paroled and free in four years.
The real break in the murders did not come from any police
investigation. While Homolka and Bernardo committed the crimes,
relations between them had deteriorated. Bernardo beat Homolka
regularly and on one occasion threw her down the stairs.
Finally, in January 1993, he beat her so severely with a
flashlight that she was hospitalized. When she was released,
Homolka fearing for her life, went to her parents' house, called
the police - and started talking.
At the trial, crown prosecutor Murray Segal read the statement
of facts, a 25-minute litany of assault, rape and torture that
left seasoned law enforcement officers and journalists in tears.
Virtually stumbling out of the courtroom, reporters called what
they heard "gruesome" and "devastating." The Globe & Mail said
the next day it was "a catalogue of depravity and death."
Bernardo's lawyer, clearly shaken, took his glasses off and put
his hand to his head while the statement was read.
Those present at her brief trial, including 'accredited
Canadian media' representatives, were banned from publishing any
evidence or details of the slayings. The public was also
excluded from the courtroom. Crown prosecutors justified the
closed door trial process as the only viable method to ensure
Bernardo gets a fair trial. Canadians were outraged details of
the murder were being kept secret, and surprised Homolka got such
a light sentence.
In fact, the crown has no hard evidence against Bernardo
except for his wife's testimony. Police spent six weeks
searching the Bernardo/Homolka house, removed more than 900
pieces of evidence, some of them videotapes. They were looking
for any evidence that was flushed or poured down the drain. It's
true the Green Ribbon Task Force took everything including the
kitchen sink. Video tapes were the only concrete evidence
available. During the week following Homolka's trial, the police
announced they had a videotape of Homolka with an unidentified
female having sex.
Part of the delay in the trial was to allow the RCMP to
conclude a special investigation. Mounted police detectives
traveled to Japan and tried to procure Bernardo's `home' snuff
videos. The video's were evidently circulating in the Japanese
sex underground. Bernardo's sex crimes were a money making
venture. This would account for his high living standards while
unemployed.
At the trial, it was revealed Kristen French was shown a tape
of Leslie Mahaffy. The videotape of the incident was made by
Homolka, Bernardo's personal videographer, and shows a very
terrified French watching a video of Mahaffy being tortured and
dissected while still alive.
Despite all the physical and videotaped evidence, non of it
supports a conviction against Bernardo. Bernardo and Homolka
were very meticulous in cleaning up after their deadly sexual
escapades. The clean up included using acid solutions to wash
away any incriminating DNA evidence left by the victims.
Paul Bernardo, present in many of the seized videos, can't be
identified. He very carefully avoids detection by disguising
himself. Bernardo appears wearing masks, hoods, and assorted
leather gear. Prosecutors, disparate for Homolka's testimony in
order to convict Bernardo, agreed to a reduced sentence to get
her cooperation.
Homolka actively participated in making the snuff video's.
The videos contain numerous acts of horror, mutilation and
torture. In one video, Bernardo wants French to perform oral sex
on him. When she refused he pulled out her teeth, one at a time
until she agreed to perform the act. Both Bernardo and Homolka
removed her fingernails on camera. French was also shaved from
head to toe and forced to eat all of her hair. Autopsy reports
found her digestive system full of hair. They also cut off one
of French's fingers and toes each day she was held in captivity.
Homolka videotaped Bernardo performing cunnilingus on
French's dead, rig amortized, black-blue body. Then they both
had intercourse with the corpse. Video evidence also exists of
Homolka masturbating with severed body parts.
The Crown obtained the publication ban not to protect
Bernardo's right to a fair trial, but in order to keep secret the
lack of evidence against him and the particulars of the plea
bargain with Homolka away from any public scrutiny. If Homolka
changes her mind and fails to testify, the crown prosecutors will
lose this case. This prompted Bernardo's lawyer, who opposed the
publication ban, to say the Attorney General `made a deal with
the devil'. Without Homolka's evidence it is very possible
Bernardo will walk.
The Attorney General recently decided not to hold preliminary
hearings in the Bernardo trial. This is a serious departure from
standard judicial procedures. The Attorney General's mandate is
to hold the full trial sometime in 1995. This will benefit the
Government in avoiding public scrutiny and embarrassment until
after provincial elections are held.

What violations of personal privacy? This would be the most insane pile
of drivel I've seen on the net in a long time, except for the call for
donations. There is a method in his madness. Other people try to sell
swamps in Florida, but this guy is trying to sell a coverup!

It's simply amazing how much of the above material was ripped off
- entire passages word for word in places - from the FAQ file.
Even yesterday's Toronto Star article sounded a lot like the wording
in the file (that thing I posted quoting the article on movies
sounded a lot like some old posts that I read a while back).

I don't see what the publication ban has anything to do with
"socialism" ("the evil communists socialist governemnt of Ontario
etc....").

"CItizens coalition for responsible government" - what a cliche.

since when was the ban a privacy issue?

i'd class the fight against the ban as anti-privacy.
