Nothing, now, but in the past, the recitation of the alphabet included,
after the letter "Z," "& _per se_ and," pronounced "and per se and," from
which the word "ampersand" developed. It meant "& by itself 'and'"/"&
representing itself." That is, "&" was treated as if it were the last letter
in the alphabet. If we wished to use that fact to extend the above list we

Which was, in English, a former spelling of "et cetera."
