ww.samhsa.gov/voiceawards/, this documentary film (
amongourkin.org) follows Can Truong, a refugee who was among the millions of boat people who fled Vietnam in the 70’s, as he searches for healing, dignity and recovery from bipolar disorder.
"'Can' courageously breaks the silence about mental illness, trauma and the Asian American experience— a compelling story that would otherwise go untold."
— Amy Cheng, PhD, Asst. Prof of Psychiatry, Yale University School of Medicine
"This film captures the spirit of the person, not just the diagnosis,"
— DJ Ida, Exec. Dir., National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association
Followed by a panel discussion on "Health Equity and Civil Rights"
Due to stigma and systemic barriers, Asian Americans utilize mental health services at significantly lower rates than the general population in the U.S. Minorities face greater disability burden not necessarily because the illnesses are more severe but because of the barriers they face in terms of access to care. An exploration of the issues with leading scholars and community leaders.
