My apologies for cross-posting, but I know there are some people on this list who are not subscribed to our Canadian RDM listservs (CANLIB and forum-dataqc), and I am excited to share that we have a new open educational resource available:
Research Data Management in the Canadian Context: A Guide for Practitioners and Learners, edited by Kristi Thompson; Elizabeth Hill; Emily Carlisle-Johnston; Danielle Dennie; and Émilie Fortin with content contributed by many of our colleagues!
The full English edition is available now, and the French edition is forthcoming. Please see the full announcement below!

Research Data Management in the Canadian Context: A Guide for Practitioners and Learners, (English edition) has been officially published as of September 30, 2023.
The textbook, published in the Pressbooks platform can be accessed at:

This open educational resource is significant within the Canadian academic and government communities as it addresses unique aspects of Research Data Management (RDM) that apply to the Canadian context. Already in use across Canada as a course textbook or offering guidance to practitioners, the launch of this text has been met with great anticipation and excitement!
The textbook is divided into the following broad topics:
· Canadian Context for Research Data Management
· Working With Data
· Types of Data
· Perspectives on Research Data Management
The Canadian context means that the history of RDM in Canada and Canadian RDM policy are covered in depth, with attention given to provincial distinctions. Indigenous data sovereignty and ethically working with sensitive data are considered. Technical skills including data cleaning, preservation, and metadata are highlighted. Many chapters include examples and hands-on exercises.
As the Tri-Agency Policy on Research Data Management has recently released requirements for the management of data which affect academic institutions, those working with data – including librarians, researchers and administrators, will find the publication of this textbook very timely.
This unique textbook could not have occurred without wide engagement from members of the Canadian academic community. Chapter authors and peer reviewers from across Canada contributed to this textbook. Funding for copy editing and translation was also made possible by numerous grants, including significant contributions from SSHRC and Compute Ontario, and in-kind support from the Digital Research Alliance of Canada among others.
The editorial team of Kristi Thompson, Elizabeth Hill, Emily Carlisle-Johnston (English edition), along with French edition editors Danielle Dennie and Émilie Fortin are excited to see the formal publication of the English edition. Release of the French edition is forthcoming.

Cette ressource éducative libre est importante pour les communautés universitaires et gouvernementales canadiennes, car elle aborde des aspects uniques de la gestion des données de recherche (GDR) qui s'appliquent au contexte canadien. Déjà utilisé dans tout le Canada comme manuel de cours ou comme guide pour les praticiens, le lancement de ce texte a été accueilli avec beaucoup d'impatience et d'enthousiasme !
Le manuel est divisé en plusieurs grands thèmes :
- Contexte canadien de la gestion des données de recherche
- Travailler avec des données
- Types de données
- Perspectives sur la gestion des données de recherche
L’accent mis sur le contexte canadien signifie que l'histoire de la GDR au Canada et la politique canadienne en matière de GDR sont couvertes en profondeur, tout en portant une attention particulière aux différentes réalités provinciales. On y aborde aussi la souveraineté sur les données autochtones et le travail éthique avec des données sensibles, ainsi que les compétences techniques telles que le nettoyage des données, la préservation et les métadonnées. À noter que de nombreux chapitres comprennent des exemples et des exercices pratiques.
Avec la récente publication de la Politique des trois organismes sur la gestion des données de recherche, et les exigences en matière de gestion des données qui s’imposent aux institutions universitaires, la publication de ce manuel arrive à point nommé pour les personnes travaillant avec des données, dont les bibliothécaires, les chercheuses et chercheurs, et le personnel administratif.
Ce manuel unique n'aurait pas pu voir le jour sans un engagement soutenu de la part des membres de la communauté universitaire canadienne. Les autrices, auteurs et personnes chargées de l’évaluation des chapitres du manuel, provenant du Canada entier, ont tous contribué au manuel. Le financement de la révision et de la traduction a également été rendu possible grâce à de nombreuses subventions, y compris des contributions significatives du CRSH et de Compute Ontario, ainsi qu'un soutien reçu en nature de la part de l'Alliance de recherche numérique du Canada, entre autres.
L'équipe éditoriale composée de Kristi Thompson, Elizabeth Hill, Emily Carlisle-Johnston (édition anglaise), ainsi que les rédactrices de l'édition française Danielle Dennie et Émilie Fortin se réjouissent de la publication officielle de l'édition anglaise. À noter que la publication de l'édition française est imminente.
