Minutes from May 20th CAN conference call

  1. What are CAN's goals for the fall conference? (20 minutes)

-useful tool to do out reach, creating new chapters and expanding

-figure out ways to do outreach in our own regions and states

-resistance movement in the military is growing, many are students, will tie veterans with antiwar students

-have some sort of info shop talking about the antiwar talking points, how to make the case

-go to Veterans communities petition against the war and different politicians

-new people in the movement, some feel isolated from other students and don't know about the amazing things going on in the antiwar movement, conference will facilitate the feeling of a national movement

-strengthen our arguments

-CAN can relaunch itself as a leader in the antiwar movement, make it a great big political events

-Chapters can network and talk to others about what is working

-clarity on how decisions are made at this point, revamp CAN Coordinating Committee

-relaunching CAN thing, this conference can be big, at Madison there is a history of movement, have some sort of action at the conference Madison action brought in interest from non affiliated students

-concretely learn how to start antiwar organizations

-Speaker form the old SDS to talk about the antiwar movement from Vietnam

-Madison has a good radical history

-Action at the end of the conference, something to make our own history with.

-Discuss on the new SDS

-do something of the history of CAN, show what CAN is and has done.

-History of the antiwar movement, this is the history of CAN and this is what we are doing, present in the context of the antiwar movement as a hole

-get a video of what CAN has been doing since it was formulated


  1. What is our procedure for picking a host campus for the fall conference? (15 minutes)
    .

    Bids to host the conference are due by Sunday May 27th and should be sent to schwar...@gmail.com so that they can be posted on all can list-serve and face book groups. Conference call in two weeks to vote on conference host.


Things we will be looking for in a conference host:

Strength of Chapter

Are there other CAN chapters in the area that can help?

Ability to provide free or near free housing

Are there appropriate facilities on your campus?

Transportation to host school, major airports, public transportation?

What kind of action can be done at your school?

Community resources?

Ability to raise funds? (CAN as a hole will help too)

  1. Shall CAN organize a July retreat at the Starbright Organic Dairy Farm? (10 minutes)

    Motion Passed, be looking for more form UW Madison on this endeavorer.

4. Summer events (organizing CAN's presence at many summer conferences) (10 minutes)

    CAN has a proposal in to present a couple workshops at the US Social Forum, we will update you on this progress.

  • New York schools will look into Rage Against the Machine

  • Pitch Fork Music festival-Chicago people will look into

Put out a call for membership dues, certain amount of money each school can pay, some schools can get it from their university
