Hi,

while preparing camunda integration in some clients project the question about compatibility between the camunda modeler and other bpmn editors raised up.
In our particular case, the client ist using bizagi modeler for doing their process modelling. Trying to import one example bpmn file into the camunda modeler did not succeed successfully. See issue (https://github.com/bpmn-io/bpmn-js/issues/469).

Is there some kind of information which third party modeler tools are supported for exchanging bpmn file with the camunda modeler and camunda bpmn engine ?

Best regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Independent of the concrete problem you have, model interchange between two BPMN editors A and B works if A is able to export BPMN XML according to the standard and B is able to import BPMN XML according to the standard. If you have issues with interchange, then the problem may be either one. We don't document how well other editors' models can be exchanged with the Camunda Modeler since that would be impossible to maintain. There is an OMG working group that tests how well modeling tools adhere to the standard [1].

Cheers,
Thorben

Hi Thorben,

thank you for your answer. This kind of overview I was looking for.
But what is a good approach to answer client questions like which modeler tools are best for working together with camunda ? Do you have any recommendations regarding third party bpmn editors for modeling purposes (collaboration, simulation etc) which will work fine with the camunda modeler and engine ?

Best regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel.

These recommendations are actually hard to give – and we do not want to prefer some vendor over the other just because of coincidence. Best is to get into MIWG test results to check for specific tools you are interested in. Normally we face the situation that there is some tool already being used and we check if that works well for round tripping.

That’s said: We have more and more customers using the Camunda Modeler, respective bpmn.io, for the purpose of “business modeling” as well, as it has a great visibility and is natively based on the BPMN standard (meaning no export/import glitches) :-)

Cheers

Bernd
