Hi All,

I just wanted to welcome you all to the listserv. Please use this as
resource to pose questions, ask for advice, and share success stories
and information.

One topic for discussion to start things off--- Does anyone have any
exciting Fall promotions or events that are happening at your campus?

Thanks,
Dan

We had a successful tomato festival on Aug. 25th. We had celebrity Chef Virginia Willis do a demo at the market, and Emory Dining cooked a tomato centric menu for the day. As well, we sold gazpacho to customers. It brought a lot of people out.

In the next weeks, we are honoring our vendors, with a "vendor of the week" spotlight. We are putting them on posters, and sending out publicity highlighting their businesses.

Thanks for creating this listserve.

My name is Phil Fandel,

I am a senior Environmental Studies major at the University of Vermont. As an Eco-Rep (someone who promotes sustainability on campus) I am coordinating a farmers market on campus which will include around 20 vendors. There will be a good mix of student groups as well as bakers, farmers, and artists affiliated with the University.  It is a bi-semester event. Last Spring was the first time we put it together. We are trying to get more vendors to sell prepared food, and increase the give-aways.

One thing we have to work on is reminding students to bring cash with them, the only way to pay unless they bring a means of processing  . Our student body is about 10,000, half of whom live on campus. The first one of the semester is the 23rd of this month. If you guys have any questions please, shoot me an e-mail. I'd also love to hear what you all are doing.

Hey,

My name is Emilie Schuler, I'm a junior at Brandeis University. Last
year, we started a farmer's market at Brandeis, and it has morphed
into a student club called NaturaLiving. We run the farmer's market
and also organize trips to local farms, nature walks, made-from-
scratch cooking workshops, etc. Currently, we're also working with
some professors, administrators and other students to create a school
garden (with edible crops of course!).
I heard about this group from our Sustainability Coordinator, and I'm
really excited about being part of this larger movement!

Hello all, I oversee the Dining Services at Penn (we are contracted with Bon Appetit) and we also offer a weekly farmer's market on campus, just outside our bookstore, via a local group called Farm to City.

This farmer's market accepts students' meal plan dollars, as well as our campus debit program, PennCash. This might be something for your campuses to consider.

Also, we've been active in a regional initiative to connect local farmers with large institutional buyers such as universities, hospitals etc. and its been very successful.

Finally, Bon Appetit as a partner has a very strong commitment to local foods and have already established strong links to local providers for produce, milk, meat, etc.

Hello,
I am the Market Manager for the Houston Farmers Market that is hosted
by Rice University. Last summer we did an event called Wine Around
Texas at our Tuesday afternoon market that was very successful. We
had so much good customer feedback that we are planning an Oktoberfest
event at both our Tuesday and new Saturday market to highlight local
microbreweries.

Hi All,

If you feel comfortable, I think it may be helpful for the group to see pictures of your markets. Here are a couple of pictures from Mason.

I wish we could allow beer and wine on campus, but there's a law against it. Our market is smack in the middle of campus, which is a problem for people who want to buy watermelons and such. They have to lug their purchases about a quarter mile to the parking lot.

Would it help any of you for me to send our market rues and regs, legal release form, and vendor application?

Hello,

My name is William Powers.  I am the executive director of the Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Society (NSAS).  NSAS is a small, non-profit started over 30 years ago by organic farmers recognizing the need to change the way our food was produced.
On the campus of the University of Nebraska - Lincoln we helped to coordinate the Good, Fresh, Local program with Dining Services.  A past project was bringing a state chapter of the Buy Fresh Buy Local program to Nebraska, of which the coordinator has helped to create several Farmer's Markets in the state and is an authority in Nebraska on local foods and farms.  I have attached a recent picture from one of the Lincoln markets.

We would like to create one on campus, as there is a very strong interest, currently finances are the main hold-up.  Another might be the volume of markets already in the city.  Any thoughts would be helpful!

Thank you, I am enjoying the discussions!

William
