Hello!

I was curious how other markets on campus are run. By students? If so, how many students run it and how often do you have meetings, is it organized by committees/individual positions?

Thank you,

Hi folks,
I'm the Southeast Regional Field Organizer for the Real Food Challenge (http://realfoodchallenge.org) and thought our SE Regional Summit, coming up in less than two weeks, might be of interest to the student/youth organizers in the SE on this listserv (there are Regional Summits across the nation, check the RFC website if you are interested in attending a Summit in a different region) -

* CALLING ALL STUDENT AND YOUTH INTERESTED IN COMMUNITY GARDENING, LOCAL FOOD SYSTEMS, FARMING & AGRICULTURE, LABOR RIGHTS, FAIR TRADE NETWORKS, STUDENT ORGANIZING, COOPERATIVE BUSINESS STRUCTURES, AND DISMANTLING OPPRESSION IN OUR GLOBAL AND REGIONAL FOOD SYSTEMS... *

The 2nd Annual Southeast Youth Food Activist Summit (SYFAS) 2010!
Chapel Hill, North Carolina ~ February 5-7th, 2010

The Real Food Challenge (RFC) is a student-led, nationwide movement of committed young leaders who are working to bring more sustainable, socially just, and community-based food onto their campuses and into their communities. This February, SYFAS 2010 will gather over 150 students and youth from across the Southeast, including Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, and Arkansas to learn about sustainable food issues, engage in leadership training, and build a youth movement toward a just and sustainable food system.

Students and young people will come together for educational seminars, professional panel discussions, peer networking, activist workshops, and community dinners to:

• DEVELOP the skills, knowledge of the food system, and passion to become a more effective student leader!
• ENGAGE in professional panel discussions on current sustainable food topics, network with student and youth leaders from across the Southeast, and participate in activist workshops to start a Real Food Campaign!
• GROW our movement through sharing and learning from one another’s stories, experiences, and ideas!

Please join us to make this weekend the richest harvest of student energy and movement possible!

I am a staff person, and I run our market, among many other thingsJ   Our students have volunteered at the market before, but not on a regular basis.  The students really support the market and have developed very friendly relationships with the vendors.  It’s great to see that spirit of community!

I am currently a senior undergrad at the University of Vermont. I work as an 'Eco-Rep' -a student position that encourages environmentally conscious behavior on campus- Each dorm has a couple of Eco-Reps, but I work in the student center which gives me more flexibility with projects, one being the market.

The UVM Farmers Market Committee includes myself, the assistant marketing director of the student center, someone in the dept. of student life and the head of dining services.  Last Spring was our first market and it continuted when the Fall semester picked up.

Hello,
At UC Berkeley, we have a small-scale produce stand run totally by
students ever monday. Here is a link to our facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=148543919266&ref=ts
We buy from local farmers, use an on-campus refrigerator to store it
overnight, and sell to the campus community on a weekly basis. All the
workers are volunteers, and we communicate mostly through email because it
is difficult for us to meet regularly outside of putting on "The Local."
the whole operation is very focused on collective knowledge and shared
responsibility, so there aren't any leadership positions, really.
This is the third or fourth year running for the Local, and it is put on
by a totally different group of students than the original crowd. Let me
know if you have any other particular questions,
Thanks,
Mickey Davis

Our Saturday Market @ PSU is run by our not-for-profit with a full time staff of 5 and seasonal help as well. We also run 4 and soon to be 5 other markets around Portland. The PSU market has been in operation since 1992!
