Posted on behalf of Alex Schay, al...@carbonsolutionsnorthwest.com, regarding Port
of Tillamook Bay waste heat recovery project, which is in preliminary
feasibility study stage. The prime mover is a MWM (Cat) natural gas fired
reciprocating engine. The objective is to capture and use 1.5 MMBtu/hr of waste
heat generated by the system for a manufacturing process.
Alex Schay on the
project team says they will know more early next week, but preliminary results
from 11/25/14 measurements at POTB indicate an ability to capture approximately
0.5 MMBtu, well below the target of 1.5 MMBtu /Hr from coolant and stack gas.
If they do not get better results, the project will be abandoned. He provided
the following information:
(1) The engine is MWM
2020 Series, 2012, Serial #1325945, rated 1,200kW.
(2)The generator
nameplate capacity is 1 MWe.
Your input and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Alex
The maximum recoverable (manufacturer’s data) heat output of that engine is approximately 4,000,000 BTU/hr (1200 kWth).
If you are heating water with the engine heat, rather than generating steam from the exhaust (only), you should be able to obtain the 1.5 MMBTU you seek. However, if the return HW temperature from the process is much over 170F-180F, you will likely be forced to waste a good bit of the block heat (~40% of the total recoverable heat), since the engine block coolant must be kept below spec, which is usually in this range. Also , all of the intercooler and oil cooler heat (~12% of recoverable) are likely to be wasted if process HW return temperatures are over about 100F.
If you are producing steam only, your goal may not be achievable, depending on the steam pressure you need. Higher saturated steam temperatures mean that much less exhaust heat is recoverable. In this case, the engine block heat can only be used for feedwater heating, wasting most of it. Nearly all intercooler & oil cooler heat will be wasted.
I hope this helps.
