I found this discussion post by Kenney Jacob. Since I'm not able to
reply to that post, I'm starting a new thread here.

The original post by Kenney Jacob says:

Friends,

2009 is going to be a defining year for us in terms of growth and
getting
recognition. January is the only month we get to work free from exams
and
academic stuff. We need to take maximum mileage out of this. We have
a few
goals for Jan.

1. Make campus blog count 20 (Right now we have 5)
2. Put stalls at all college events we can reach
3. Find more sponsors to give prizes to our bloggers.
4. Organise atleast 2 training workshops.

I would like to know your opinions and suggestions regarding these
goals.

Though the post was published an year ago, there were no responses and
still the number of campus blogs is less than 10. Now we have a good
vacation time ahead, which is followed by a lazy and almost-free
january. So let us try to accomplish the first goal - "1. Make campus
blog count 20 (Right now we have 5)"

Okey, here is our game plan.
~ ~ ~ ~

1. Responsibility is equally distributed among all the current members
of our community.

2. If a member of this community is studying at a college without a
campus blog, his/her first priority will be to work towards this goal.

3. And for the rest of us, who already have campus blogs for their
college - we identify other colleges where our friends/old classmates
are studying. With the help of our friends at that college, we find
out interested, passionate students at that college and set them
towards the goal of having a campus blog for their college. Let them
do the main work, but we will support, encourage and urge them from
behind.

4. If more than one member of this community can work on a single
college, that will be much better. So if u wish you can take part in
other members' tasks.

5. Let us take it as a challenge and get the new campus blogs by the
end of January.

Please send follow ups to this post with the college's we are
targeting, the strategies and resources we are using, the difficulties
we are facing etc. Keep this alive.

Hello guys,
Here is what I've been doing.

I contacted everyone in my orkut friends list, who is studying in any
engineering college in Kerala. I asked their help in finding geeks/
bloggers in their colleges. Then I contacted the geeks :)

Not a very good response as I expected (from the geeks)., well u
cannot expect all the eggs to hatch.

One of my friend from musaliar college of engineering (pathanamthitta)
said that he's willing to work for a campus blog for his college. He
also mentioned that their HOD (cse) is very supportive.

Now I need all ur help to device the next steps.

What I was planning was to
● Ask him (our contact at musaliar) to make a team of like minded
people.
● Then the team will meet the college authorities (the HOD) and
make the proposal for the campus blog.
● We provide the team with the necessary resources (guidance,
presentations etc etc etc) to make their proposal work.

Please let me know what u guys think? +ve, -ve or anything.

I forgot to mention, Kevin has been helping me a lot with advices,
ideas and all.

Hi Saran,
Awsome work u have done there. Content is great - informative, original and useful.
I do have some suggestions.
The current theme is great in fact, it is readable and pleasant. But for a news/multi-author site like this, a magazine style layout that is capable of showcasing multiple posts will be good, a good candidate is the arras theme, being used at geciLive.com or the Arthemia theme being used at CEAlive.com.
Another thing is about being an un-official blog. It works for the time, and sometimes better and efficient than an official blog. But a serious problem is when you and the core team pass out of the college. So, it is better to either go official or create a club, (consisting of studs from all branches and batches) or something like that which is responsible for managing the site. So you can make sure the blog will continue to move on even after u and the core team pass out of the college. Also having several people on board with delegated rights and responsibilities will make quality content coming.
And finally, are u planning to join the campus blogging initiative(www.CampusBlogs.Org)? There is a campus blogging meetup going to be held at 26th this month, try to come. Invite ur team members too.

(every expressed opinion is strictly personal )

I have mentioned it previously while chatting with kevin, geciLive.com is unofficial. Plans are underway to hand it over to the alumni association, which is yet to be formed. Yet again, it is still unofficial. While talking about kenney months ago about joining campus blogs initiative, he didn't say anything about being official, when I asked about the requirements to be a member.

dear saurabh,

I guess u didnt get the point..!! what ever it be www.campusblog.org has its own protocols.!! which was defined at the budding stages itself.

No matter whether mentioned or not by someone www.campusblogs.org "donot" support unofficial blogs. But due to certain constraints we do give time limit and provide the help from our side to make the campus blog official.

I guess you got the point...!!!!!!

Saurabh,

Official is always better as its keeps us away from trouble. Handling a media is a very responsible job, so it needs to have well defined rules.

Being unofficial is ok, as long as the content is regulated and someone is there to take responsibility. Then again its always better to go official.

I understand.
Even though my personal support is for unofficial, we are trying to make geciLive either official or to hand it over to the alumni association. A lot of alumni have expressed interest in the site and have inquired how to participate. But the problem is that an alumni assoc is yet to be formed. Talks are going on, I guess.

yet, having an unofficial blog is better than having no blog, right?

of the two blogs i manage... my school blog skpsbytes.com is listed in
campus blog website.... but johnknight.in - the campus blog of
st.johns medical college, bangalore... is not listed ... the first
medical college in the country to join the campus blog network.... i
think should be listed in the 'official list'
