First, the animation style. I was not expecting MAPPA to go a more muted and subdued color palette for this anime, but it works shockingly well. The shadowed and darker backgrounds and scenery, really help to play up the colorfulness of the characters and important moments, as well as all the beautiful gory carnage that Chainsaw Man enacts on his enemies.
Warning: SPOILERS for Chainsaw Man episode twoThe second episode of the Chainsaw Man anime has already skipped over a crucial fight that transpires in the manga. The battle isn't just important because Denji transforms again (especially since he doesn't become Chainsaw Man in episode two) but because of what he almost does - and what this means for his character.
Episode two of the anime completely skips this moment. Like Chainsaw Man's manga, Denji and Makima are about to get some udon noodles but all he does is pass out into her bosom because he lost so much blood from his earlier battle in the first episode. In the manga, Denji passes out in the same way (and in the same place, of course) but instead of being drained from his fight against the yakuza in chapter one, it's because of the Muscle Devil he fought against moments earlier.
Leaving this scene out of the anime was a major mistake since it accentuates Denji's eventual obsession with Makima in later chapters of Chainsaw Man. Although the anime's version of Denji thinks that Makima isn't as nice a person as she originally seemed, he isn't put in a position that eventually leads to him actually leaving her. How Denji later refuses to leave Makima when Aki gives him an out is therefore much more impactful in the manga because it shows how much she is able to manipulate Denji. At first, this change is just a display of how desperate Denji is, but it later evolves into much more when his feelings for her take on a more mature tone and when Makima's true intentions eventually come to light. This dynamic is lost in the anime. Sure, Denji begins to view Makima negatively in the anime when she starts treating him like a dog, but his later 180 isn't so dramatic because he never actually acts on those feelings.
Hopefully, the anime won't continue this trend because Denji's obsession with physical intimacy gets much more nuanced in the Chainsaw Man manga, and if any scenes from the manga showing this progression get axed from the anime for whatever reason, the viewer's journey with Denji as he grows into a deeper character won't be as pronounced. That said, the anime studio's decision to bring a moment from much later on in Chainsaw Man's manga into the first episode is encouraging since it provides an opportunity for more nuanced scenes that Chainsaw Man mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto didn't even cover himself in his original masterpiece.
Like a lot of anime openers, this one focuses on world-building and setup. There are devils and their devil hunter counterparts. There are shady underworld yakuza (Japanese organized crime) dealings. And there's our main character, Denji (played by Kikunosuke Toya in the Japanese dub), who's... how can I put this delicately? Simple.
Denji has the makings of a stock anime protagonist. Tragic backstory with a dead parent or guardian? Check. Chasing a dream in spite of dreadful circumstances? Check. Improbable way of obtaining powers? You bet. Still, you can't help but root for him.
He's down on his luck, living in deplorable conditions, and hunting devils to pay off his late father's debts. And as a teenage boy, all he wants to do is eat good food and get a girlfriend. Can't really argue with that. It also helps that he has such an endearing relationship with his devil-dog, which, by the way, has a chainsaw protruding out of its face.
When the Chainsaw Man finally makes his grand entrance and lets it rip, that's really the highlight of the episode. We see zombie-devil guts and limbs splatter across the screen, accompanied by the sound of heavy metal and gnashing of chainsaw blades, and you can tell the show's artists put some thought and care into the violence.
The anime offers nothing wildly impressive for now, but it's just enough of a tease in a 24-minute package to hook me. If you like the carnage you see in the first episode, then you might want to stick around to see where the story goes.
One year later, we're still none the wiser about Chainsaw Man season 2. Still, we should hear something pretty soon. After all, the anime roared onto our screens with the sort of confidence only reserved for the best and brightest of the medium.

Later in the interview, Ohtsuka said that while he does not plan to invest 100% in all anime titles in the future, he is actively working toward building the company so that it can negotiate investments on an equal footing with other members of production committees. He commented that there is a lot of skepticism within the anime industry about studios being able to turn a profit, and he seeks to change that perception through MAPPA's example.

"Chainsaw Man" was the seventh highest selling manga series in 2021 with more than 5.2 million copies sold. This is most impressive considering the six manga ahead of Chainsaw Man have already had anime adaptations, thus boosting their sales. "Chainsaw Man" saw higher sales in 2021 than "Haikyuu," the highest selling sports manga of the year, which already had four seasons of an anime adapted.
"Chainsaw Man" follows the story of Denji, a young man who makes a contract with a devil who grants him the ability to transform his body parts into chainsaws. With these powers, Denji joins a group of devil-hunting humans to exterminate the evils of the world.
Mappa Studios, the same company that animated "Jujutsu Kaisen," is adapting the anime. "Jujutsu Kaisen" won best action in 2021. This gives high hopes for the adaptation of "Chainsaw Man," with the trailer also looking very promising.
You can check out the teaser trailer above, but aside from confirmation that it exists, there's been no word on who will be directing, but Mappa is producing the film once again. Manga creator Tatsuki Fujimoto has previously said that the 1999 anime film Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade was a big influence on the Reze arc, and again recommended everyone watch it at this year's Jump Festa.
Those that watched the first season of the anime might actually recognise Reze, as she was teased right at the end of the last episode. There she was played by Reina Ueda, who you might recognise from her role as Kanao Tsuyuri in Demon Slayer, and she's set to reprise the role for the upcoming film.
Outside of that, we'll just have to wait and see to find out more. There's not even a release date yet, though for comparison, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the film prequel of the anime series, was announced in March 2021, and released the same year. So a 2024 release for the Chainsaw Man movie wouldn't be entirely unsurprising - just don't hold me to it.
Parents need to know that Chainsaw Man is an action horror-themed anime series based on the Chainsaw Man manga series. Devil hunters are tasked with eliminating devils, a type of supernatural creature that's born from humanity's fears. Expect to see intense scary imagery and heavy amounts of gore and graphic violence. Decapitation, dismemberment, disembowelment, and graphic body horror are frequently shown. Chainsaws, axes, swords, guns, and other weapons are commonly used. There's some partial nudity and sexual content; one scene shows the back of a naked woman. Throughout the show, sex is referenced as the main character's primary motivation. Expect frequent use of curse words ("f--k," "s--t," "a--hole," etc.) throughout. One character is shown smoking. Combining over-the-top stylized action with insane graphic horror, Chainsaw Man is intended for adults and older teens.
Based on the manga series by Fujimoto Tatsuki, CHAINSAW MAN is an anime series about Denji (voiced by Ryan Colt Levy), a devil hunter who obtains the power of the chainsaw devil that allows him to transform parts of his body into chainsaws at will. Denji uses these new abilities to brutally eliminate other devils, supernatural creatures born from the fears of humanity. Denji then joins the Public Safety Devil Hunters, an official organization authorized by the Japanese government whose mission is to protect civilians from devils by hunting and eliminating them.
