Hi all. Hope everything is going good for you. I am posting a short
version of the survey that we discussed in class for your mini-
research assignment. If you are still not sure how to get started,
this will help you. Let me know when you are done.

Attn: BA 2nd year journalism students, Campion College

The following is a survey questionnaire for a 10-minute interview.
Each of you in group A should go ahead and ask the following questions
to 30 people.

Group A

Here is a list of some things people have said about why they read the
newspaper. How much do you agree or disagree with each statement?
1. I watch the TV because it is entertaining.
Strongly agree agree no opinion
disagree strongly disagree
2. I watch the TV because I want to kill time.
Strongly agree agree no opinion
disagree strongly disagree
3. I watch the TV to keep up to date with what’s going on around me.
Strongly agree agree no opinion
disagree strongly disagree
4. I watch the TV to relax and relieve tension.
Strongly agree agree no opinion
disagree strongly disagree
5. I watch the TV to find out what other people are saying about
things important to me.
Strongly agree agree no opinion
disagree strongly disagree
6. I watch the TV to learn manners, customs and cultures.
Strongly agree agree no opinion
disagree strongly disagree
7. I watch the TV because it helps me to talk about things that make
sense to everybody else
Strongly agree agree no opinion
disagree strongly disagree
8. Please feel free to give any other reason as to why you watch TV.
Because

Group B
Each of you will ask this one question to up to 30 people:
Please tell me why you think people watch the TV?
Take notes about your encounters, your own feelings etc. Try to find
out why people do what they say they do with TV or Newspaper or Radio
or Internet.
Ask several follow up questions about their reading habits,
preferences to particular forms of the mass media, particular genre
within those forms and other things that you think are important to
ask.
‘A’attempts to generate quantitative data from a kind of survey, which
belongs to uses and gratifications research. ‘B’ seeks to answer the
same question in depth, under the qualitative approach. Please choose
an approach that seems right for you individually. I would want the
class to be divided evenly under the two groups. Now within each
group, replace the word ‘TV’ with ‘Newspaper’, Radio, and Internet and
adjust your questions for your individual work. It will be very good
if some of you individually focused your study on various genre within
each medium, such as news, entertainment, sports, horoscopes and
weather panels. I hope each of you will have an individual work to do
while sharing approaches, methods and techniques with your friends.
Write your report based on the 11 steps of research as suggested by
Baker.
That’s a final reminder about your mini-research assignment. Let me
know of your progress. Thanks. JP

hello sir,
our exam finished and we are on to doing our assignments.. i have
some questions regarding this survey i.e how to do it..
1. we have to divide students in 2 groups- group A and group B.
2. each of us have to ask questions to 30 people. that means 4
students each have to ask 30 people each.
3. we can ask people of same area or each student have to ask in
different places.

or is it possible if we gather and discuss about it..
zenith.
