I hope that you’re planning and last minute prep is going well. Ours has turned into that "I can't forget to take this" chaotic mess that happens right before we leave. Speaking of which - We will be departing in 2 days. That means that you'll only have my assistance for one more day so if there is something urgent that needs to be taken care of, let me know now. Please do not ask for details about how you are orientated or any specifics about your placement - sorry, I do not have that information.

The following is long but really important.  Please make sure that *EVERYONE* who is arriving early receives a copy of this email.  As we all know playa time can happen on the way TO the playa as well - some folks may not expect to be the first to arrive but they may in fact beat the 'alpha' team for one reason or the other.  To make sure that everyone can find your little home on the playa when they get there we ask that all the early builders from your camp check out this email and follow the instructions.

1. Before you leave home

Does everyone in the vehicle have:
  • Their ticket? (put them somewhere safe like the glove box)
  • Their early arrival pass? (put them in the same safe place as the tickets)
  • 1 vehicle pass for each vehicle?  (put them in the same safe place as the tickets)
  • The solar lights/ border marking items packed in an easily accessible place?
  • Know the name of your camp (the one used on your questionnaire)?
  • Know their approximate location? (9:00 sector)
  • Know who their placers are? (Papa Bear & Baulknaub)
2. Just Before the Gate
  • Does anyone need to pick up a ticket? (or really need to use the toilet?)
    • Yes? Then the entire vehicle needs to head to the will call lot. It’s everyone or no one at the Gate.
    • No?  Hooray, let the Gate folks know that you’ve got all tickets, early arrival passes, and vehicle passes and proceed to the Gate.
3. At the Gate
  • These are the surly / black clothed/ ticket taking/ searching folks
  • Ask if the Greeters are up and running yet.
    • If the answer is Yes, finish your business with the Gate folks and then proceed to the Greeters station to announce your arrival to us.
    • If the answer is No, Please pretend you are at greeters and follow the instructions below under “4. At Greeters” below. You will be announcing to the Gate folks that you are a Themecamp looking for placement. They will let us know.
4. At Greeters
  • These are the happy/nekid/colorful folks at your second stop
  • Let them know that you are the first people arriving for your camp (even if you’re not supposed to be)
  • Let them know your camp name, your approximate location or sector, and your placers names (Papa Bear & Baulknaub)
  • They’ll radio us and get you a meeting spot and approximate wait time (We will be meeting the majority of you at the intersection where you'll be camping.)
  • Drive along the back street of the city (Laffing Sal) and take a right onto the cross street we’ve asked you to meet us at. Please do not try to take a shortcut to your meeting spot.
  • Drive directly to the meeting place with no detours - even if we’ve said it’s going to be a while.
  • There may be a long wait it’s because we have camps in front of you in line.  We place camps in the order they’ve arrived.
  • If we miss you because you’ve taken a detour and are not at the location we’ve asked to meet you, we’ll help the next people waiting for us.
5. Arriving at the requested meeting spot/meeting your placer
  • Pull off the road if you are able to and to the side of the road if you are not able to.
  • Turn off your vehicle and relax!
  • Pop a frosty beverage (nonalcoholic if you're still driving) and enjoy the fact that you are back on playa breathing in the dust.
  • Shake off that city from your shoulder and go and say hi to any camps/vehicles that may be waiting for us as well - they will likely tell you of some super cool thing they're planning on building/providing - and now you've just made more friends you can go visit during the week.  :)
  • We will get there as soon as we possibly can and walk you through your space as well as point out some cool camps in your vicinity and where necessities like the toilets are.
6. Placement Working Hours
  • Flexible - we work while we have camps arriving.  Ask the Greeters (or Gate if the Greeters aren’t open yet). They’ll know if we’re placing or if we're attempting to get a little shut eye.
7. If you arrive and we're not placing
  • At Greeters Station
    • The Greeters can direct you to a place to pull over and get some shut eye.
    • When you wake up, walk over to the greeters and follow the instructions from  ‘4. At Greeters’ above.
  • Into the city somewhere -
    • Do *not* set anything up that cannot be easily moved the next day.
    • 9:00 Public Plaza or D-Lot: We prefer you stop in D-Lot for the night but if you just have to be in the city – you impatient animal – park in the 9:00 public plaza at 9:00 & K. D-Lot may be better because you can announce your arrival as you go through Greeters/Gate first thing in the morning.
    • If you park in the public plaza, keep an ear out for either a golf cart or a Cushman puttering around outside your vehicle between 8-9 am.  That'll be either Papa Bear or myself hoping that you'll poke your heads out of your tent/ vehicle and say hi to us.  Your approximate spot:  Do not try to locate your spot yourself. Very likely you'll assume you’ve found your actual spot but you'll probably be wrong.
    • When you wake up walk over to Playa Info in Center Camp or to a Black Rock Ranger station and let them know you are a placed themecamp. Follow the instructions from ‘4. At Greeters’ onward.
8. At your camps’ space
  • We will walk your boundaries with you.
  • This is the time to grab those handy dandy markers/solar lights that you remembered to pack in an easily accessible space.  Place them at your corners as we walk your boundaries are an easy way to remember your space.
  • Driving Passes -
    • If you will need to drive to service an art project or if you will need to deliver or pick something up from another camp you will need to remember to ask us for a driving pass at this time.
    • If you have no need to drive please park your vehicles and leave them
9. Build Week
  • Be respectful.  Remember that everyone is working hard to build the city. So, Please:
  • No late night partying.
  • No loud music after dark.

We do a lot of hard work before we hit the playa - the kind of work you would never do without a reward at the end of it - and you know what our reward is?  Getting to see your shiny happy faces and let you know all the fun stuff happening around you.

We're looking forward to seeing our fabulous sector of the city come to life!!
