shutter button problems

Am I doing something wrong or is it the camera?

Have a new camera, when I press the shutter button (all the way down)
sometimes it takes a photo and other times it doesn't. Photos taken
can be viewed, no error messages.

If it's still under 1 year, send it in for warranty repair.

it must be a defect in manufacturing. send it back for replacement.

How quickly are you pushing the exposure button.  You may not be giving the camera to get a good focus and if so it will not shoot.
