My canon 7D is regularly over-heating. I use a battery pack and
generally 30mb per sec cards. A lot of my projects I am shooting 4-
minute clips, with around 2 minute down-time inbetween. After 40 mins
or so, it overheats and turns itself off. I lose the last recorded
file. I can turn the camera back on after about 20 seconds but lose
the performance/interview etc last recorded. It's fairly common with
the 7D but a few people have suggested that when they use a monitor it
doesn't over-heat. Does anyone know a way of turning off the LCD
screen without having an external monitor?

Occasionally I get a message saying 'Err 02, cannot access card,
format or re-insert'. This also causes me to lose the last file. Any
advice on hwo to avoid this?

You need to be shooting on at least 60mb/s cards. ideally, 90mb/s. You will run into all kinds of problems shooting HD with less than that. That will help out with overheating less often and a sure fix for the card errors. Unfortunately the canon DSLR's overheat after long shooting periods in warm environments.

Is your firmware updated to the latest? I get those problems before I updated the firmware.
After I upgraded it, I get overheating warning after longtime use outdoors and in hot weather, and its asking me to take a rest. So
I turn it for for like a minute and then back to work. but I didn't get the card error before. I'm using it all the time outdoors.
Im in abu dhabi by the way. The temp here in summer and hot season can start at 42 and peak at even higher than 54 (car thermometer says so)
My cards are also 30/mbs cards. I am  using them all the time for some shoots. for interview, it turns off at around 11 minutes and warns about overheat.
also format the cards properly before use. hope this can help.

I'm pleased you don't get the problem when using 30mb/s cards, as I have many and would cost alot to upgrade!

I got the 7D in January and have not updated it, will check for any updates this evening, thanks for your comments!!

If you have the money, it would really help to eliminate some problems to go highspeed with the cards. but for the meantime,
try the firmware update .. to latest version... if you are outdoors in hot climate, better to put something to cool down the camera.
the 7D has 2 processors inside and it can get heated in there very quickly. you can maybe bring with you a towel and couple it with a
chiller/ice underneath it or something and place it inside an insulated bag.. here u can cool down the camera body if you need to shoot quickly /continuous .. or .. get another camera body and use them alternate.just an idea.

What firmware?  The old ones have a lower temp tolerance.
