Hey folks,

I was in a discussion last night where we made a working agreement to better facilitate our discussions - similar to YAG ground rules.

After I suggested "step up/step back" a friend suggested amending that to "take space/make space" as a less ableist way to express the same idea.

How would folks feel about adopting this language when giving the YAG rules as a way to better fit in First Parish's mission?

Best,
Andrew

I don't have much of a horse in this race as I'm sort of in the grey area between YAG and YAG-emeritus these days (for reasons of schedule, not age) but I haven't seen much on-list discussion of this idea, so I wanted to pipe up to say I support it. I don't know what it's like to have "step" language when one can't step, but the change couldn't hurt. Additionally, the idea of stepping up and back seems to be frequently associated with how much someone has the figurative talking stick, and the idea of taking and making space seems to encompass more than just amount of talking, but other ways that space is shared, such as leadership, including other perspectives, etc.
