"Scientific Computation in the University of Cambridge" Seminar Day -
20th March 2017
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scientific computation has a long tradition in Cambridge, but has tended
to be fragmented
between different departments and research fields. We are organising a
seminar day on 20th
March 2017, to bring together researchers and programmers from different
departments
with common interests in the following areas:

  * Research in Scientific Computing
  * Software engineering and sustainable software development
  * Computing infrastructure and High Performance Computing

We will also be using the event to launch a new project: the "Cambridge
Centre for Computation" which
will be a focal point for future research projects, funding and
collaboration, raising the profile
of research computing across the university.

Staff and graduate students are invited to give short talks or posters
on their
work and the topics listed above. Microsoft Research have kindly agreed
to host the
event at their research centre on Station Road. We will also have a few
other participants
from industry and Research Councils.

Amongst others, there will be presentations from the following groups:

  * Filippo Spiga (HPCS) - Research Computing in Cambridge
  * Garth Wells (Engineering) - FEniCS sustainable software development
  * Chris Pickard (Materials) - CASTEP development, successes and
challenges
  * Dominic Orchard (Computer Lab) - CamFort - verifying Fortran
  * David Wales (Chemistry)

If you would like to participate, please fill out this short form
[https://goo.gl/9FP878] by 14th November, and save the date
20th March 2017 in your calendar.

Please forward this email to any colleagues or graduate students who may
also
be interested.

Many thanks,

Dr Chris Richardson - BP Institute, http://www.bpi.cam.ac.uk/user/chris
Dr Garth Wells - Engineering, http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/~gnw20
