So I'm cycling out of Harston and go over a level crossing. There's a
sign on the left that says "Park here and use phone at crossing". But
it's after the crossing. And there was no sign, that I saw, before the
crossing.

Discounting the mad notion that someone with a large load is supposed to
go over the crossing and then phone up, or unhitch their load beforehand
and drive over in the cab, what is going on?

Did try to find an answer but couldn't see one.

It's not just there, it's the same at the LC on the road leading from
Milton down to the Cam, and in several other places as well.
I've often wondered why, but asumed that someone would eventually post
the question on cam.*

Which crossing? Not by the former station on Station Road. That's got
automatic barriers.

Yep, that crossing

I think the OP may be referring to this sign, SE bound up the hill

http://g.co/maps/ywa2w

There is, however, one NW bound village side

http://g.co/maps/3w5by

There are also 2 signs for drivers of large loads, one SE bound

http://g.co/maps/jfj2g

And one NE bound

http://g.co/maps/kxfsq

I wonder if the ones on the nearside are for drivers who notice something unusual with the crossing, and are to ensure they park well away from it ?

As those images show, there are signs on the approach to the crossing
telling drivers of large or slow vehicles that they need to phone for
permission to cross. Having phoned for permission and obtained it, they
then need to phone again after crossing in order to let the signalman know
that the crossing is now clear. That's what the sign on the nearside after
the crossing is for.

Of course all these notices area result of the crash at Hixton.

see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hixon_rail_crash

Note Hixton not Hinxton...

11 people killed when a 12 coach train hit at 75mph a 120 transformer
being slowly moved over an AHB.

I knew someone who was in the rear coach. He didn't even realise that
the train had hit something. His briefcase stayed on the rack, and he
thought it had just done an emergency stop. It was only when he looked
out of the window ad saw the first coaches all stacked up that he
realised there had been a serious crash.

Or Hixon even!

All this discussion is why perhaps this crossing should be converted to CCTV
supervision.
