Hi folks,
new in town, and looking for a cheap, reliable, good quality
local mechanic to do a bit of work on my car, a VW passat. Can anyone
recommend somewhere, of course the VW dealer wanted an arm and a leg,
which I cant spare at the moment.

Sorry if this is the wrong group, be gentle on the flames, as I'm new to
the group/area.

Ian.

Have you noticed http://cam.misc.org.uk/index.php/Car%20repairs ?

Welcome. (-:

an aside: I've been amazed how reasonable the prices are as charged by
my (non-cam) Subaru dealer.

The Skoda dealer (at Cowley Road) suggested that they had many VW owners
coming their way as their hourly rate was less. Alternatively we used to
take our Audi here:

in Burwell.

YMMV!

I think Cowley Road garage do a fair bit of work on VWs, and I
certainly recommend them for the services they did on our last car ( a
Peugeot).

Thanks guys,

They gave a decent estimate, ~£500 for a new clutch, compared with the
dealership which were quoting ~£800 for the same job. Teach me to buy a
modern car I cant work on easily!

Will give the skoda dealer a bell too, and see what they are asking.

I should add that we've not (yet) used them for any work on our car -
just a purchase.....

I've been happy with B&T Motors in Ely (Cambridge Road, next to the petrol
station). 01353 667788

They've been quite happy to explain their work, and not had a problem with
me doing things myself that I'm capable of doing. I've not had any major
servicing work (replacement CV joint gaiter, 55ukp, intermediate service
90ukp) but they seem to be reasonable.
