There used to be a number of shops in Cambridge that sold just jeans. Does
anybody know if there are still any left? - a quick look around the town
centre and the Grafton area has drawn a blank.

Alternatively, are there any ladies clothes shops which have jeans
departments with a range of jeans from different manufacturers?

Thanks

Ah, I'd forgotten about that place. I recall taking a look when it first
opened and being distinctly unimpressed.

Do you happen to know if they have changing rooms where clothes can be tried
on?

Debenhams has a pretty good range of women's jeans by several
designers, including John Rocha, Jeff Banks etc. Apart from that,
there is always Gap of course in the Market Square.

OK, thanks. I was really looking for Wranglers, Levis, that sort of thing -
nothing *too* designery.

John Lewis and Debenhams do different labels.

Next & M&S have lots of different cuts...good for women with bottoms.

Gap and French Connection have more fashionable cuts (ie women/girls
with no hips or baggy post natal tums!) but I'm sure Gap spray something
on theirs because they seem lovely when you try them on but quickly seem
thin and scraggy after a couple of washes.

Buying a pair of jeans for someone else seems like a risky business. If
you know the exact size and label I'd order from the web.

Thanks, I'm not buying for someone else, just trying to find somewhere where
they can look at a good selection and actually try them on.

> If you know the exact size and label I'd order from the web.

Agreed, we've been doing it that way for years and it's both cheaper and
simpler. Unfortunately the manufacturer has just discontinued the style that
we've always ordered, and their 'new & improved' version is a very poor
fit - hence the need to find some sort of alternative.

Indeed, I tried assorted jeans on in there at the weekend. The
assistants are also very helpful.

Why is Debenhams the only high street shop that seems to stock branded
jeans these days? I've always bought Wrangler, Lee and, occasionally,
Levi's in preference to shops' own brands, as they seem to last longer.
But now in most cases the choice is between lower quality jeans like
Burtons' own, or overpriced designer tat like Jeep (?) or Cat (?) or
whatever.

I assume it's something to do with jeans being regarded by today's yoof
as "fogey pants".

Dunno. But apparenttly 'Diesel' jeans show off your buns to good
effect, and, assuming you have any worth showing off, this is
apparently of great interest to many women. I'm told that I have good
buns, if nothing else, but I'm not the least bit interested in
obtaining jeans to show them off. There shirley has to be something
more to life.

I always found the opposite - or at least with Levi's anyway. Used to wear
them out in a matter of weeks, whilst cheaper brands used to soldier on
for ages. It's so long since I've bought Levi's though; maybe the
quality's better these days. They used to be made out of *really* thin
material...

I could only find some designer label when I looked in Robert Sayle (aka
John Lewis).

No. Until 5-odd years ago, Burton and BHS for example sold branded
jeans. As did Top Man, but they're no longer extant.

There were also far more independent jeans shops that sold the standard
Wrangler/Lee/Levi's fare.

Debenhams' only have a handful of styles at any one time :(

John Lewis always used to be the cheapest source of Levi 501s in
Cambridge but it is some time since I bought my last pair from there.

Although I would agree that Levis do last longer than most other jeans
they do not last longer than the equivalent number of Tesco jeans you
can buy for the same price!

I think you'd probably need a full size JL, not the current temporary
RS.

I think Tesco tried selling branded jeans, but got blacked becuase they
tried selling them too cheap. Maybe the branded manufacturers priced
themselves out of the market.

How about GB's in Lion Yard, IIRC they have plenty of Jeans logos in the

But you get to spend more time in the comfort zone of a properly
worn-in pair of jeans, no?

Didn't they get clobbered in the courts for selling grey imports? One of
the manufacturers took exception to Tesco bulk buying jeans intended for
another market...

D2 in the Grafton Centre have a big range of Levi's. They were having a sale
on last week - red tab and 501s.
