And I mean *fresh* (like live langoustines - yum :-))
This deosn't appear to be in the FAQ (then again, I've never seen
anyone ask before...) Does anyone know of a decent fish market in or
around Cambridge?
Cheers,
Jon
There is a fresh fish stall in the market in the centre of Cambridge near
Lion Yard car park. I don't think there is anything 'live' but there is a
pretty good selection.

How about the fish stall in the Market? Haven't used them, but others
seem to think highly of it.
A former colleague was a huge fan of the fish stall at Royston Market,
but I don't know if that stall (or rather, with the same proprietor)
is still going.

Try the fresh fish shop in the back of the Trinity Foot on the A14
near Swavesey.

There are two fish stalls in the market place. IME the one closer to
the centre of the market is better than the other.

Hmm the fishmonger on the market is pretty good in my opinion, whether
he goes to the extent you ask for I dont know.
Loch Fyne have a shop and publically pride themselves on the freshness of
what they provide in the restaurant...whether that reflects down to the
shop in Cambridge I dont know. Their mail order stuff however does often
arrive on ice in boxes labelled 'Live Mussels' - whether you have ordered
mussels or not, suggesting that perhaps their mail order goes far enough
in that direction..though their mail order range is not going to be as
wide as a good fishmonger (their website is about www.lochfyne.co.uk or
www.loch-fyne.co.uk not sure which).

If you can't hear the sea, the seafood isn't fresh.
(sorry, I was brought up roo near the coast to even consider the possibility
that it coulbe be fresh if you don't buy it off the boat)
Buy it off the boat? pah - that's not fresh.
I grew up in Hastings; if it wasn't straight off the hook of my own
rod it wasn't fresh :-)
My wife's Japanese - it's even worse for her.
Having lived in Birmingham for a bit and now being here, my standards
have dropped slightly. My boat got stolen, and there aren't any fish
left in English coastal waters anymore anyway so I can't even very
easily catch my own at the weekends :-(
I'll have to survive on what I can find from the recommendations on
this list.
Cheers,
Jon
Uptide of the sewage outfalls I trust?
Mark ;-)
But how long has it been on the boat, and was it frozen? I once heard
that when you buy cod in, say, Whitby, it's usually come via Billingsgate.
Of course, and far enough from Dungeness to avoid old 3 eyes :-)
Cheers,
Jon
Probably does if you get it in Tesco.

Not exactly a stall but I've heard very good things about the van that
parks outside the Portland on certain days of the week. Drives up here
from somewhere east of the town with sea.

And Im told there is a good fishmonger at the Oakington farmers market,
comes in from the coast...someone like that might take orders from you for
live stuff.
I gather they get some rather exotic species of fish around the outfall
there. At least they mentioned this when we last took a tour a few years
back. They were at pains to point out that this was because of local warming
of the water rather than anything to do with stray radionuclides ;-) We've
bought some nice fish from that bit of Romney Marsh over the years, all the
right number of bits.
